I think if you look at the history of veteran top-4 D currently in the league you will find that very few were impact players at 21-22 years old.

Morgan Rielly (#5 OA) is 2 years older than Fleury and just last year had his first “breakout”. Guys like Duncan Keith and Shea Weber were just Rookies at the same age.

Same amature scoutting staff, though. And unless we had some crazy over-riding by management going on, they are the ones that count at the draft. I think it is a legit concern. But also, as you say, water under the bridge for a particular player. Fleury is what he is, and he is what we have from that pick, at this point. Good news is that he almost not even necessary on the back end for us as we are loaded in the NHL at this point and have some promising assets in development, too.

I'm not sure I agree with you. 6/7 guys are a dime a dozen. A 7th overall pick should be more than this. Otherwise it's a doozie. Teams historically build from the draft. We have seen us trade out 1st round picks lately. Skinner, Lindy, Hanifin. One could argue we got Hamilton in return which is fair.

6/7 guys are a dime a dozen, if you're willing to cycle through them and have to deal with a soft spot in your lineup every year. There actually is some value in having a rock-solid bottom pair guy who can anchor that pairing every year and allow you to experiment with more offensive minded partners. Especially if he's almost guaranteed to be stuck with a small contract, so you can just lock that in year after year. It's not a game-changer but it is part of building a competitive team for the long term.

We wouldn't be looking at Fleury as a disappointment if he were taken even three picks later, at #10, where you feel pretty good about finding a regular contributor.

But trading away our 1st rounders while potentially watching others not live up to their potential isn't a great spot to be in. Especially that Skinner for Pu trade. Complete disaster.

I do agree with this. Sitting here in 2018 with only three of our own 1st round picks likely to make the roster -- two rookies and a bottom-pair guy -- is pretty damning toward the 2010s-era rebuild. Getting almost nothing from Skinner (8OA), whiffing on Murphy (12OA), being forced to trade for value from Hanifin (5OA) and Lindholm (5OA), and underwhelming on Fleury (7OA) and Gauthier (21OA) set this franchise back tremendously from where they should have been by now. At this point at least it feels like we've turned the corner to the point of improving rather than treading water.

Yeah this entire rebuild was a bust. At least we lucked out with Aho and got lucky with the 2nd overall pick and landed Svech. TBD on Necas.

We won? I am happy. I must be bad luck because I watched most of the games last season live and we didn't win with AHL roster, yet last night we did. Sorry guys...

Other than that, from highlights it seemed like a great game, Svech is looking very good, hopefully he will keep going like this.

Just watched the highlights, no love for PDG’s assist on Svech’s goal? That was sweet.

That stuff might work in the preseason, but not against a team playing its top defensemen and goalie.

If not a set play per se, somebody clearly coached the center trigger man that the weak-side shooter will be crashing the net when the defense collapses on him. I suspect we'll see this a lot with Aho/Svech manning those off-wing positions. It's really hard to defend, even when you've seen it on tape a few times.

BTW, it was Braydon Coburn who got caught in no-man's land, and Dan Girardi on the other side, so while not "top" defensemen, they've been around long enough.
