Actually when DW traded for Fox he didn't tell Waddell he would not sign with CAR. He said he wanted to going back to finish his degree, because it was important to him and his family. When DW had second thoughts and traded his rights to NYR, he quit school and signed with them right away, because all of a sudden, his degree was not that important after all. He was never upfront with Waddell and planned all along to backdoor CAR and cause them to lose assets. He should have spoken up at the original attempt to trade for him and allow Waddell to work out a different trade for Hanifin/Lindy.

From the terms of the trade it is clear this was seen far coming:

Or maybe the idea of the condition was that if Fox somehow happened to not return to school after all but instead signed with Rangers immediately after the trade with some sort of guarantee that he would get a shot in the NHL roster, there would be an upgrade to the 2020 3rd pick coming at Canes' way.

Let’s put a few things into perspective here:

I think the relationship started off on a few assumptions. An assumption from CAR that they’d be able to quickly move on from Faulk after acquiring Hamilton, and an assumption from Fox that CAR would still be in rebuilding mode so spots would be available to him.

When they made the Hamilton trade in June of last year, they tried all summer to trade Faulk, to no avail. So. I’m guessing the initial discussions with Fox were that there’d easily be a spot for him to take after his season with Harvard was done. Also, in June of 2018, no one could have foreseen the success CAR would have and also Faulk’s resurgence.

Suddenly, it’s April 2019, there’s no room for Fox to jump into a spot for a few games to burn a year off his elc and there’s presumably no spot for him this coming season. From his standpoint, I see exactly why he refused to sign. From a CAR standpoint, is Fox really good enough to supplant Faulk or Hamilton on for a team working its way back to playoff contention every year? (Not to mention the fact there’s also Pesce and TVR in front of him).

It’ll suck seeing Fox possibly hit his ceiling on a rival division team. But, Waddell did the absolute best he could and now has at least 2 high end prospects in Rees and Honka plus a likely 2nd next draft for a guy that was never going to be a Hurricane.

All that said, I don’t think it’s realistic at all to expect a 19 year old to tell you exactly what he intends to do in a years time. CAR got the best they could out of the situation and now they also have Priskie. I wish Fox great success in his first 30 NHL games this year, after that, I wish him a long and happy AHL career.

I know all that. My post was in reference to Hunter's statement that the Fox and Priskie situations are exactly the same thing. They were a bit different. That's all I meant.

Any regrets, I wonder? Other teams wanted him too...

Faulk likely gone before the season; TVR likely gone after the season. Hamilton hits UFA in 20-21. There will be a spot for him quite soon.

Spending 30-40games in the minors to get acclimated to pro hockey certainly isn’t the worst thing for his development. I’d be pretty surprised if he doesn’t get a look with the big team at some point this season. He showed well in the Nashville prospect tourney.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a look early on on the 3rd pair, after healing up, for his PP skills alone

Pretty sure his value is gong to be set by other teams needs rather than where he fits in on the Canes. It's not like he's got a NTC contract where the Canes can only deal with 1 or 2 teams who could hold them hostage (see Skinner, Jeff). And Priskie signed a 2-way contract, so there's still the possibility of McKeown starting in Raleigh and Priskie in Charlotte.

Sure, McKeown is unproven at the NHL level. But his progression and success in the AHL leaves a lot more known about him than the 18 year olds who will be available by the time the 3rd round (or later) hits. How highly do YOU value a 3rd round pick? And what do you think are realistic expectations for a 3rd or 4th round kid? I'd say that they're more of a crap shoot than McKeown.

What's cool is that there's a decent chance that we actually get an answer to what McKeown is worth within the next month or so.
I think we've got the answer to what McKeown is worth now. Cool.

Waiver claim or third-fourth round pick? The verdict is in.

How has he been in preseason?

injured first day of camp

He looked good at the Nashville prospect tourney. The offense to play in the NHL is definitely there, in my viewings and humble opinion, but he's probably not ready for 3rd pair defensive duties. Hopefully they give him some time in Charlotte to round out his game. I see his ceiling as a 2nd pair offensive D and #1 PPQB down the road, with the floor of a 3rd pair PP specialist.

That it is. Not only surprised he was waived, even more surprised he wasn't claimed. But glad he's still in the Canes system. It will be interesting to see where he eventually ends up.

Good article on Priskie and why he chose Carolina, vs. some of the comments in this thread about how "he wouldn't have signed in Carolina unless they guaranteed him an NHL spot" and "why would he sign in Carolina when the road to the NHL is so much more difficult?" or "he didn't bail on the Caps to dwell in the minors".

Chance To Develop Fueled Chase Priskie's Choice - Charlotte Checkers Hockey - gocheckers.com

Granted, some of this can be chalked up to "saying the right thing", but it's pretty clear Carolina didn't guarantee him an NHL spot in order for him to sign and an easy path to the NHL wasn't a priority for him.

“I think they do a phenomenal job here of developing players, not just defensemen,” said Priskie. “That was a big thing for me. I’ve never tried to rush development, I truly believe that you develop on your own pace. I seem to be kind of a late bloomer as some people call it, I’ve never tried to rush anything. Being able to come here and really learn the pro game and develop and not just be able to play but to learn to dominate and be a great player, that’s what I strive for.”

“I love how aggressive they allow their defensemen to be, to jump up in the rush and try to create offense,” said Priskie. “Throughout camp I talked a lot with Dougie Hamilton and Jaccob Slavin and they showed me a couple things while I was playing, and then just being able to watch them and the way they conduct themselves every day as true pros is something I’m trying to emulate now here as I start my pro career.”

“The main thing I want to work on is my defensive play,” said Priskie. “If I can be a player that breaks pucks out really well and is sound defensively, it allows me to play my game offensively, which kind of just comes instinctually. I don’t really have to think about that part of the game.”

I forgot to say "I told ya so!" Americans will almost always sign with an American team. (I got killed for saying that.)

Anybody know the top college UFAs this year?
