(a) they don't trust Ned as a #3 right now or
(b) they wanted to waive Ned either to play in the AHL or put him on the taxi squad, but didn't want to risk someone claiming him until they had another option lined up.

Do you not already have Mrazek and Reimer on the roster though?

They can't send Forsberg to the AHL/Taxi Squad, so they'll have to keep all three goalies on the active roster.

Well, if Edmonton had kept him on their roster they wouldn't have lost him.

He'd have to pass through waivers again. The Oilers would just claim him back.

I feel like a team like the Devils would snap him up. A decent goalie only making $850k in real dollars for the year seems pretty attractive.

I can understand like NJ claiming Comrie, after the Crawford news and the team has no choice to sign someone.

Good points. I was only thinking of his cap hit when considering the chances of him being claimed.

Now that they've waived Nedeljkovic, I suspect that they didn't want to waive Ned until they had a viable option for a #3. They can easily keep a 3rd goalie on the roster, but probably would prefer to put Ned on the Taxi Squad or in the AHL. But if they waived him yesterday, and someone like NJ took a chance a chance and claimed him, they'd be left with virtually nobody as a #3 if/when injuries and Covid hits.

So claim Forsberg first and now that they were awarded him, they waive Ned. If Ned makes it through waivers and they can assign him to AHL or taxi squad, I won't be surprised to see them next waive Forsberg. If someone claims Forsberg, that's fine. If Ned gets claimed then they probably keep Forsberg on the roster, at least for now.

Just my speculation on why they claimed him.

They can easily do that.

1) Bean and Geekie are waiver exempt so can move to the taxi squad if needed.
2) Joakim Ryan passed through waivers so can be assigned as well.

Seems weird. Didn't Forsberg leave Carolina to sign in Edmonton. I think that might mean that he didn't want to play in Carolina anymore. Poor guy can't get away from there.
