I feel like there is some serious bias in this thread. For 2017-19 the most valuable d-man is JC, aka the guy who was voted top 5 defensemen the last 2 years. Now if Orlov can step up and protect his goaltenders from allowing skaters to come in close and allowing close range shots. As well as get a body on the puck or man instead of that weak *** poke check he does.

Carlson led regulars in Corsi and was 2nd in +/- to Kempny but his awesomeness lies in how the pace of the game picks up when he’s on the ice.

Guess I gotta stop watching what happens on the ice to truly understand how good/bad players are and what makes a solid team.

what is awesomeness?
I will be happy to answer (the formula is very simple), but please tell me first, do I ask you (anyone) how do you dicide a player is good/bad then eyewatching his game? You see one action, you remember 10 to 12 more random?/bias(sure) plays of that player and that's all. Consider the 'awesomeness' as my (and only my) opinion on how good the player is if you dislike the statistical approach.

There’s just so many things that factor into a player than just blanket stats. Quality of competition they have to go against, zone starts, etc. are only a few of those things that I can think of right off the bat.

Plus, what formula was even used to come up with a players “Awesomeness” rating? Not trying to be an ass but I can’t figure it out based on that chart alone

Not questions you or formula. I just wanted a definition.

My question now. What do you guys think? Why my 'awesomeness' stat is continius from year to year (with some trend) for the same player, but not the +/-, Corsi nor eyewatching (today Niskanen is a God tomorrow he is a cap dump)?

Basing evaluation of a player on the hits and takeaway stats reported by the NHL. :biglaugh:

Not sure I understand this @Hivemind. I would understand the need to mock this (you always seem to need to mock people) if it was across different arenas, teams, and games — but since he is only comparing Caps players to each other (and hence the same “statistician” is being used for each individual game), then it’s merited. It’s a level playing field for the players.

I think that’s what Tex and others are saying with this.

Am I right, Tex?

Am I wrong that taking possession of a dump in is a takeaway. Yes? Catching a zone clear at center is a takeaway?

Lets look at the best NHL Ds in takeaways/60 from the last three seasons:

Any questions?

Well, this points to what Hivemind was mocking you for. Takeaways, giveaways, hits etc are very subjective. Really depends on WHO is doing the tally.

As an example, this shows 5 current (or one season removed) Carolina Hurricanes in the top 14. Are we to honestly believe that the 5th best Hurricane D-man at takeaways is better at it....than the top guy is for 20 some other odd teams?

No way.

My bad. This is a good point. Let's fire the Carolina 'statsmam' than. Anyway Carolina had very good D last year.

Rids, I think the use of nhl giveaway and takeaway numbers along with 5 on 5 ice time is an I'll advised gauge of the group. Carlson's 5 on 5nice time is a direct result of the heavy load of special teams toi he carries.

I am not mocking anyone but there is no chance that Orlov was the team defense mvp. That conclusion should indicate that something is wrong with the criteria.

You don’t mock people, that’s what @Hivemind does with his need to laugh at most anyone’s opinion that’s differs with his.

My point around these stats are they can be relevant when comparing players against teammates. That’s about it.

Does that make sense, Tex?
