It’s gotta be Fever. I know Lapierre is the shiny new toy, and I get that. But Fever is NHL capable right now. No one else has his ability to step in now (heck, some want him top 4 already as well!)
Right now Fever is top3. Only Orlov and Carlson are over him. The rest is far behind.

1-2)Orlov
1-2)Carlson

3)Fehervary

4)Dillon

5-9)LaDue
5-9)Kempny

5-9)Schultz

10)Alexeyev

11-12)Schilling

Beck Malenstyn can probably play in the NHL right now also. Readiness shouldn't be the overwhelming factor. Just one of many.

The question for me remains Fehervary's offensive upside. He's a sound player but is he dynamic? Is he a 20 point defenseman? 30 (without PP time)? I'm not so sure there's top pair upside in any event. While he's a relatively safe bet to make it I still don't really know what he'll be. Is he a Kempny type largely 5-on-5 player? Or is there more?

Lapierre hasn’t accomplished anything. I’m happy the team has him, but I don’t know how he can be ranked ahead of Fever

at least, not yet.

Upside. I like Fever a lot but he's not a guy who teases "top 10 draft pick" skill. In a readiness poll, sure, but upsides matter here

Fever for me, based almost entirely on his proximity to the NHL and high likelihood that he is at worst an NHL caliber defenseman of some sort.

Terrified about Lapierre's neck/head/back, so while I acknowledge his upside is probably the highest of anyone in this poll, the chances of him not hitting that upside are substantial to me. He'll probably be #3 or #4 for me until he proves a bit more.

Realistic outcome ranges in my opinion that doesn't mean shit to anyone but myself.

McMichael:
Best case scenario: Top line Center
Worst case scenario: 3rd line winger

Fever:
Best: Top pairing 40-50 point D Man, Nate Schmidt-like in use and performance.
Worst: Bottom pairing/#7

LaPierre:
Best: Top line center, star
Worst: never makes it to the NHL

Alexeyev:
Best: #2/#3 all around solid, smart, can defend and pitch in offensively with good instincts.
Worst: #7/#8 perennial good AHL guy, not quite good enough for regular NHL minutes.

In his few minutes with Caps I didnt find shooting or passing skills of a future 40-50 point Dman unfortunately. I think every gifted offensive D can show more since day 1.
With some work Fever could be a very solid piece, maybe even complementary top pair guy. But 40-50 points? I dont see it.
Good news - Caps dont need him to be like that from many standpoints :P Namely for salary cap purposes it'd be valuable to have young solid not expensive allround defender.

Lapierre - Id like to vote differently next year, if he progresses. I dont know what he will become.

So I went with AA. Higher offensive upside, size, many tools are there. One healthy season in the KHL - and he's almost ready I guess.

You don't see his shooting skill? His quick snapshot is one of his better assets.

Plenty of D who've gone onto 40-50 point peaks didn't immediately burst down the door with tons of points in the NHL. Keep in mind that Fehervary only has 6 NHL games to his credit so far. But Ryan Suter only had 1 goal and 16 points in his rookie year. Kimmo Timonen had 12 points in his. Mark Streit had 11. Mark Giordano had 1 points in 7 game cup of coffee season, awfully similar to Fehervary's, and then just 15 and 19 points in his next two NHL seasons (with a season spent in Europe in between them).

Nobody is saying Fehervary is going to be like Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes, or Miro Heiskanen and light up the league immediately. But there are plenty of other top pairing guys who weren't pouring in the points immediately, especially if they didn't have powerplay time.

Do I think Fehervary is going to be an offensive catalyst or Norris contender? Not likely. But given ice time, he will certainly be able to log some solid point totals.

That one post aside, I don't think most people are basing their projections of his offense on those 6 NHL games. It's that he's never been productive anywhere other than his last World Juniors. It's probably partly on how his teams in Sweden used him, and reports on his World Junior play when he was encouraged to contribute offensively and had PP time were positive, but the fact is that he hasn't been productive anywhere yet.

Other than Ryan Suter, all the players you named had produced offense at other levels before reaching the NHL. Timonen and Streit had put up points in multiple seasons in Finland and Switzerland, respectively. Giordano had 58 points in 73 games in his first pro (AHL) season, although his OHL numbers before that are mediocre.

I don't think it's out of the question that he could be a 40-point guy, but it seems hard to project that based on what he's done at every level so far.

Unless my math is off I believe Fehervary had the lowest 5-on-5 points per game among Hershey's six defensemen to have played at least 40 games last season. He was slightly lower than Burgdoerfer, both of whom were lower than Lewington. (The data: Djoos: 0.429, Nardella: 0.366, Alexeyev: 0.293, Lewington: 0.279, Burgdoerfer: 0.167, Fehervary: 0.161.)

Some of Fehervary's points came short-handed, which suggests he can turn defense to offense at times and use his skating. We've seen glimpses of it in rookie tournament games and in the pre-season with the Caps. Mostly it's been pretty individual in nature, though. Certainly his defensive game has led to him playing up levels to where maybe he hasn't had the comfort of being more aggressive. Maybe it's something that will come in time as he increasingly becomes comfortable. But it's not per se a natural byproduct of his game to this point. To the contrary, production that low was even more concerning than I thought it would be. It's just boxcars but, still. If Laviolette wants his defensemen to consistently be up in the attack and joining as a fourth attacker then he probably will need some time in Hershey to fully adapt that mentality. The raw physical tools are certainly there. It's just hard to judge the extent of the offensive sense when the more superficial indicators of productivity haven't largely been there to date.
