I'm starting to get the feeling that he believed he'd have a shot at getting a few sniffs as the main roster this year and around October he realized that the pipeline ahead of him is somewhat jammed. I mean there is a huge difference in who the team is most likely to call up and who they see as having the highest ceiling, but right now you've got to think Walker, Barber, Gersich, Pinho, and even Shumakov all have a better chance of getting a call up before AJF, I wonder if that irritated him and he simply decided that Sweden was a better option at the moment.
I'm not really too excited about him. He looks like a decent 2way player but he isnt close to NHL level yet. Something in his favor is that we dont have any prospects ahead of him that are a sure thing.

Can't say I know too much about the situation in Washington, but I think a factor that also might play a part is that he feels he has a pretty good chance att winning the SHL with his boyhood team this season. Maybe not the favorite(don't think there is a clear favorite this season) but for sure on of the favorites

Djurgården should be a good place for him to keep developing. He took big strides last season and hopefully he can continue to do that this season. He knows the city, teammates, coaches etc very well and have very good chemistry with Marcus and Jonathan Davidsson

Kuznetsov didn't come over a minute before HE was ready so I will respect AJF's decision.

Didnt leave the same taste as “he came, tried, ran home”.....I’ll respect the decision when it turns out to be that right decision ultimately led to him being a fulltime NHLer

Until then, it reflects poorly on him.

I thought all along Sweden was the better place for him. Our pipe is clogged. He got a good taste of the culture and important to most, our tiny ice surface.

Now he can go back to presumed more TOI and time with the hand grenade cough puck on his blade in their glorious glacier sized european rinks.

I still contend players can play on any sized rink and quickly adapt. Adapting is the thing humans do best. I feel that way from playing on roller rinks tennis courts basketball courts courts roads parking garages and dorm hallways.

Was he not just listed on the top line a few Hershey games ago?

I think adaptation and the time it takes depends on what you're adapting to. Angles? Yeah, not long. Running yourself out of room because you're used to playing at a certain speed can take some time though. Learning how to sucker people to create the space you need first can be a touchy process when you used to have enough speed and room to cut right around them instead.

So the only thing I really heard watching all the Hershey games was Fisch mention homesick. Don't know how true it is but he's generally really really well informed and has the best insider info in all of Bears hockey. Not sure if he was spitballing or not but but he did say it so I'm inclined to believe it had a lot to do with that.

Edit: he also said it about Siegenthaler and called his return to Switzerland before it happened.

Is it awful that all he would have to say is "I can't even drink here" and I'd probably understand?

I 100% understand. Not that the guys cant buy him beers, but its more the question of, why I am treated like a child here.

I am not sure folks can digest the level of cultural differences we are talking about for a kid coming over here to ride the little chocolate train in Hershey. Getting to europe is the first step, but even then, every country is different.

Randy random story.se ..... I went to Gothenburg with 3 other dudes for a bachelor party (after Amsterdam and Copenhagen what a trip). Anyways. we sit at an empty round table at some bar, and within about 30 minutes, swedes overtook our table and sat among us and starting talking to us. Guys and girls alike, and they all spoke perfect english. I go to take a piss from pounding ciders, and every time the guys next to me are talking to me in swedish. I had no idea what they are talking about, i just spat out random sounds and cuss words like they were. Strangers were basically talking to me the entire time. This has never happened to me in the thousands of times I have gone out to american bars.

EVERYTHING is different. Clothes food cars bars police... cops do anything to not intervene and let the people do as they wish. Almost apologizing to for you being too drunk. Get this, promiscuous women are not frowned upon. Yes they are a sexually liberated country and everyone is allowed to have sex without being judged. Mind blown. At that same bar, a woman warned me that I needed to be careful as guys were getting their beers laced with roofies. Sounded enticing until I realized it would be some viking dude trying to drag me to his arctic flat. And they have herring pizza. Or some fish toppings. And their pizza is super huge and super thin. No air conditioning. Topless beaches. Nuff said.

I don't blame him for going back home, its not like he is going to stop developing. He got a cup of coffee here. Its just like a kid from Hershey getting a cup of coffee in DC. It's the same thing, and its a good thing.

I hate to talk negatively on the kid, but he was super disappointing the few times I was able to watch him. It's probably due to all the hype we heard about him at the end of last season. I'm hoping he goes back to Sweden and does extremely well and comes back to North America with confidence. Hopefully there's some kind of plan in place by Washington's developmental staff for AJF to work on a few things while he's back home

This is a great post! You need to turn it into a short story. ;)

I also agree 100% with your take on AJF. This won't stop his development one bit.

Thinking about Hagelin yesterday and I realized that is exactly the type of player Axel could become and I would be perfectly fine with that.

Insane speed, bulldog on the puck, no hands to finish on all of his breakaways. I have faith he will be a Capital and do very well if given the right role, third line checker and PK specialist.

Sounds great, except the herring pizza part or getting roofied by a Viking.

Honestly, if someone who is 18/19 has a choice to make a choice between a very comfortable life as a pro athlete in Europe or living in Hershey PA, I can understand how Flowby may be contemplating staying home. Maybe he just missing herring pizza?

I've never heard of such a thing and that sounds disgusting. It must be a Gothenburg thing, they're pretty much known for fishing, being named Glenn and having poor dad humor. Luckily Axel is from Stockholm which is the good side of Sweden ;)

Btw it looks like he might make his first game today (in 1,5 hour) already, against those weird people from Gothenburg

Oh yeah, and swedes use commas instead of periods for numbers, and vice versa. Hell, I think all of europe does. Maybe the world. And that stoopid confusing metric system, yeah, that too. Military time, of all the nerve. But the list goes on and on.

Another side story of when I was in Goteborg, it was right I think after "we" pulled out of Kyoto. It was a war zone over there. Well, war for them, versus bullets flying over here in the wild wild west. Cobblestones flew. There was a national scandal as a policeman shot someone, and IIRC the police doctored the audio of the event.

Try and buy american grade cold medicine there  you have to eat the whole box to equal one of our doses.
