Makes sense. I was hoping to move on from Sutter but there weren't a lot of 4C options out there, and ones like Kuraly got a lot more money and term which would have been ugly. He should be fine in the 4C and PK role as long as Green leaves him there.

Nah. Dzingel isn’t very good and isn’t much of a C. I prefer Sutter who actually knows how to play a 4th line C role

Absolutely. How are the two even "comparables"?

Dzingel is basically a "top-6 or bust" winger, who is mostly a bust even in that desired role. When he's "on" and in a Top-6 role and zooming around actually scoring a bit, he can be a far more "exciting" player to watch than Sutter. But those instances are pretty sporadic, and mostly Ottawa-centric for some reason. And he would not be getting any semblance of Top-6 ice here.

Whereas Sutter is pretty much exactly what you realistically want in a Bottom-6 "role player" specialist. He's much more capable as a Center, especially as a faceoff ace. He can play more limited defensive minutes with other offensively challenged and raw skill deficient linemates, and not really have it affect his productivity much. Plus, he's still a good PKer. Add to that the "intangibles" and his known fit and likeability in this specific locker room and coaching staff, etc. and it's hard to ask for anything more in a depth player for just over a million bucks.

If we didn't have Pearson and/or Podkolzin penciled in to "Top-9 Winger" type roles, sure...take a flyer on Dzingel maybe. But for the situation we actually have, Sutter is the actually appropriate fit. Dzingel is just a random non-comparable player on a similar contract.

At that price point and term, I have no problem bringing back Sutter. Green seems to love the guy, and I suspect Benning was swayed by the coaching staff.

He'll fit on fourth line and be a big upgrade over Beagle. Still a decent PK'er and will get you 8-10 goals. But if his play really falls off the map, then you can bury the contract in Abbotsford.

I'm not stoked about this, but atleast it's at a good term and price. At 4 million per year, Sutter's contract was an absolute joke, but at just over a mill it really isn't all that bad. I didn't really like too many of the remaining 4th line centermen available, other than Khaira. Sutter for one final season will be tolerable, he can win faceoffs and play decently on the PK. Now if only he could stay healthy. Hopefully after this season it's bye-bye for good.

Ehhh, I dunno about Khaira's health. I would be concerned about how he got knocked out in the fight against Ritchie, and the concussion when he got hit by Romanov a few weeks later, a hard hit but one that didn't involve direct head contact.

With Dickinson ensconced as the third line center, it's a fourth line role for Sutter with occasional faceoff and penalty-killing duties. And for one year at $1.125m, you can live with the black hole that passes for offense. Definitely an upgrade on Jay Beagle in that role.

Still, if they put a couple of energy guys on that line like maybe Motte and Highmore, it would nice to a see a fourth line that actually scored more than one goal a month.

9 goals in 42 games last year is not a black hole. Realistically that’s solid production for a guy on the fourth line. The problem with Sutter has always been his exorbitant salary compared to his production and of course his injuries. If we can get that kind of production at this new salary he should be fine along with his defensive play.

I would just hope that the next time he gets injured, they shut him down until he's fully recovered. He always looked so slow and labored shying away from physical contact presumably playing while injured

The term "offensive black hole" refers to his ability to use his linemates. Or in this case, the complete lack of ability. In his prime, he had legit skills to score 20+ goals. Issue was, he's a center & his wingers will just as likely see a large dropoff of offensive production.

Can't make a pass to save his life. Of all the Canucks i've watched in the Benning era he's the one i was the most hopeful would screw off to somewhere else when his contract ended. We should be careful, next time he starts talking about his team-mates balls, he might ask for one of Hoglander's. You know, how unfair it is that he's apparently got only one and Nils plays like he has 3.

Who did Sutter play with last year? Michaelis and Hawryluk?? Before that it was Gaudette/Virtanen/Roussel who were labeled trash here, so looks like Sutter finally has good linemates since he arrived in Vancouver. Let's see how he does

You’d be hard pressed to find anybody on this board that has hated Suter and everything do with his trade and time with Vancouver more than I have.

but this is manageable

Sutter was always overpaid, but the big issue came when the team acquired Beagle - the team paid so much for two centers with the same role and same weaknesses, resulting in the team being dunked on in terms of possession for half the game.

With only one of those players, paid as a 4th line center, the impact on the team is much more manageable.

I mean I get your point, but Sutter was originally anointed as a “foundational player” and saw time in the top six with the Sedins.

He was sheltering Horvat though! Make Horvat handle the tough defensive role as the checking center while All Balls Sutter gets the easy life riding shotgun with the Sedins! It's the old "that which does not kill you makes you stronger" approach.

Err, Sutter is going to be playing limited minutes on the 4th line , probably with Motte and MacEwen. So expect a career low in ppg and gpg.
