out of all the guys we drafted in 2020 I am most excited about this one.
If this kid can make the Russian WJHC roster this Xmas, it would be huge. I think his two-way game might work in his favor when it comes time to finalize the roster.

This 2020 draft was really unlike any other in NHL history. With playoff hockey; international tournaments; and the draft combine all being scrapped, scouts just didn't get a handle on some of the prospects that they would have gained in previous years.

We might look back on Zlodeyev and marvel at how he lasted all the way to the sixth round.

2021 could be similar. Lots of North American players won’t get into much action. Slow start will bury a kid in the draft.

Absolutely.

It was a full season for the CHL guys, basically, but the USNDTP and Euro-jr players really rely on the U-18s as a showcase and there will be results all over the map eventually from this draft because viewings were limited.

Guest on 650 (Steve Cordianos) is a draft specialist. He’s just saying he had Zlodeyev as a first round talent. He’s extremely high on this player, and believe we got an absolute steal where we drafted him. Sure sounds like we got a good prospect in this guy.

You mean Steve Kournianos? He's a "draft specialist" as in he publishes a draft guide and website. His background is that of a journalist. It's nice to hear that he likes Zlodeyev that much. He had him ranked 28th. From what I read, it seems that Zlodeyev was making progress towards the year but the scouting reports certainly don't suggest a 1st round talent.

Canucks Army has placed 2020 draft picks Jurmo, Zlodeyev and Persson all solidly within the top-15 prospects. And based on the starts to their seasons this year, you'd have to say that if they hadn't been shut down last March, they probably would have built on their resumes and ended up as much higher picks.

But there's going to be anomalies like that throughout the 2020 draft. Players, particularly in Europe, just didn't get the exposure and dropped on draft day as a result.

So props to the Canucks for investing the scouting time during the COVID-shortened season and picking these players. When you don't have a draft pick until the third round, you have to be either 'good', 'lucky' or both.

He had him in the late 1st, button had him in the 2nd so 2nd round talent with 6th rounder.

Yes. Button's projection is that he would be an elite offensive #1 C whose listed comparable is Patrick Kane/Steve Yzerman. People go crazy about Benning comparing Juolevi's hockey sense to Lidstrom and here we are with Button.

Look, I love for all this to be true. I just prefer to temper my expectations and think there isn't a need to justify his draft position. Pavel Datsyuk was drafted in the 6th round and I'm not going to argue that he was a top 3 talent that everyone overlooked.

Don’t believe everything you read. That is a fake link (even if it is connected to TSN). It says he was ranked #1 in mid and final season TSN rankings which is not correct. Not to mention giving a 2nd round projected player (at best) 5s across the board and comparing him to Kane/Yzerman (two franchise players who play different positions and play nothing alike) is good for a laugh.

This kid sounds like a gem of a pick considering on where he was drafted. The Canucks didn't really have any top picks in this years draft, but it sure is looking like Benning and company got some quality prospects out of it.
