It was easy to see by the play of each player. Kostka was clearly better than Stanton in the pre-season.

Seriously though, how bad does this movie look?

Holy crap. Why in the world does anybody think Vancouver would waive Alberts? It ain't happening. It shouldn't happen.

This is insane.

Because he's lost a step and has sucked and otherwise, why make a waiver claim?.

"Good" post.

And I think we share the same definition of "good."

Ok, ok....let me at least look at the bright side of this, Gillis has progressed from picking up guys who couldn't make a non playoff team to picking up guys who couldn't make the Stanley Cup champs. Plan the parade!

It may have something to do with the fact that he was the worst of their final 8 defensemen and made the team over Corrado, who deserved to be there.

... because he's been the worst defenseman in camp... and in every pre-season game he played the pairing he was on tanked, hard.

vs SJ2: -3, 2 PIMs, 16 mins, 1 Hit
vs Edm: -1, 2 PIMs, 17 mins, 2 Hits
vs SJ1: -1, 11 PIMs, 14 mins, 4 Hits

Yeah I'm pretty sure I was Alberts' last supporter, but it's been a shocking performance this preseason. His play has really dropped off.

Hey I thought he was fine over the last 12 games or so last season... but I was quite shocked at how bad he was in the pre-season.

Same here. If he were just bad or rusty, I wouldn't put much stock into it. He was flat out atrocious.

Have we been watching Stanton for a few years too?

Wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't. He has been the Ice Hogs best D for a few years and Wolves played them quite often. I'm not a scout and I've seen him 10+ times, at least. It's not like they're claiming crap players like Steve MacIntyre or Luke Gazdic.

Indeed.

Looks like Stanton only played the Hawks first 3 pre-season games. Had two good games then an awful game against the Caps, then didn't get anymore games.

Finished even rating in the pre-season but they were playing him 19 mins/game in the games he played.

Hopefully things work out for him. It's good that he's getting an opportunity to play in the NHL - he obviously wasn't going to get one in Chicago.

Alberts will be on waivers before the day is out. As he should be. Horrible player.

Stanton has been a quality AHL player and on the fringes of making Chicago. Hopefully he does as well as Aaron Rome did here when claimed in a similar situation.

Will be an upgrade on Alberts almost by default.

Considering people hate Rome around here (for no good reason), I think your comparison might fall on deaf ears.

Message boards never fail to amuse.

We need to upgrade X position! Wait, how dare you trade someone to actually do that!

We need to get some depth up front! Wait, how dare you give up a 4th round pick!

We really should pick up a player or two on the waiver wire! Wait, I didn't want that player, I wanted this other player. What a waste!

Anyways....I have no idea who this guy is but some time it's not a bad idea to pick up the last cut from a position the cutting team is deep at. We'll have to see how it works, but I agree it likely means that Alberts will be waived or that Hunter will be sent back to Junior. Maybe they continue the competition for the blueline over the first handful of games.

Yep the Oilers claimed another goon. The canucks are intimidated! they will be shaking in their skates when Gazdic, McIntyre and Brown come over the boards for the Oilers. Oh wiat a minute, that's shaking with excitement at the chance to light the Oilers up for 45 seconds.

Because of too many left shots?

VAN clearly wants depth players that impact the game in some fashion, as in high or low, rather than steady. They could have waited for a Sulzer type, but chose Alberts for size/physicality. They could have signed Gilbert/White/Kostka, but instead chose to sign the PP specialist in Weber. Lastly, they picks up Stanton here, who as reports suggest is (haven't seen much of him at all) physical, but not a steadier option that some of the names available. Not sure how I feel about the strategy yet.

Also, it seems like they are looking for a breakout from the younger aged players: Kassian, Lack, Weise (just turned 25), Schroeder, Dalpe, Stanton and Weber. Surely, one of these guys has to advance.
