Drafting under Gillis was bad yep, but pointing out that Boeser absolutely crushes anything we got out of our late firsts under Gillis is no different from pointing out that 9oa Horvat absolutely crushes 5 and 6oa JV and OJ. I'm super excited for EP and Hughes, but it wasn't long ago people were calling 2014 our greatest draft ever, franchise changing, etc, and turns out got almost nothing out of it. Time is as kind to prospects as it is to fruit.
Even if we take Boeser and Horvat out of the equation things still look better under Benning. As you've pointed out, there's still time for these prospects to turn sour, and a lot of them will, but the vast majority are trending in the right direction. Guys like Schroeder, Gaunce, Jensen, Sauve, Mallet, Hoznik, ect, 20-90 range picks, were stagnant immediately after being drafted. Hutton, Connauton and Corrado are all Gillis and co. have to show for throught six years of later round picks. Gaudette alone is already a bigger win than those three. Drafting outside the top 10 has been far better.
That 2014 draft class definitely isn't the best ever but it's still their deepst in a decade. It looks a lot worse because of poor assest management. McCann would be the No. 2 center on the depth chart right now, a huge organizational need, if they didn't trade him for garbage. Tryamkin would be No.2/3 on the LD depth chart if things didn't end on a sour note. Demko is still tracking like a future starter. Forsling is at least a replacement level NHLer and has more upside than Clendening did at the same age.
Benning's had his flubs (Virtanen/Joulevi) but he's been above average overall and far from terrible. Have to give him credit for overhauling the scouting department. Demoting Delorme and promoting Brackett to director of amateur scouting was huge.
