Still need one more year to achieve truly historic futility, which is the point that I call it quits.
The actual sad thing is that it has a good chance of happening if we bring back a Ward/Darling tandem and don't upgrade our top 6, along with having Pastor Bill still coaching. I think we could potentially upgrade our forward group but the other two things I'm not sure about. Will that be enough to make the playoffs? Don't bet on it.

I'm not even convinced Ward being back is THAT bad of an idea (though obviously I'd like to see an upgrade) but I'm not just on the #DarlingOut train I'm the f***ing conductor.

I'm very concerned about who we might be able to get to come here as a UFA goalie next year given what we've heard said so far. Who would want to come here and have to start in a 3 goalie plan with the loser going to Charlotte? Couple that with one of those 3 being Ward, who this organization can't seem to say goodbye to, and that would make me nervous if I were the new guy. Also, given that we just inked a new ELC goalie which would make 3 guys for the 3 spots in Florida/Charlotte without Darling being sent down, I get the impression that we may force Ned to be the backup to Ward next year if Darling fails, or that Ward may be gone so that it is 1) New Guy, 2) Darling/Ned as backup, and 3) Ned/Darling in AHL.

Any and all of those options suck.

That was my thought process after Waddell mentioned the third goalie plan. After hearing that's what our plan is potentially, we're likely to only get guys with no other choice (meaning they likely suck), a guy playing in a European league that might be willing to spend some time in the A if it comes to it, or a young player that can be sent down with relative ease. A goalie from a Euro league or a young goalie are not terrible options, but they would still be major unknowns and leave us too easily in a situation where Darling makes the team.

To your other point, that's why I've maintained no matter the pain, you can't have Darling in this organization taking time form the multitude of young goalies we have in the system. Unless Ned does end up as the backup here, it needs to be Ned/Booth in Charlotte, and Helvig in Florida (barring the longshot of Helvig passing either of them). We still need to get rid of Darling, even if those initial plans make it seem unlikely.

There's got to be some underperforming skater not worth what he's getting paid somewhere that could get traded for darling if we retain. Maybe someone like Gaborik? I don't know I'm grasping at straws.
Maybe for a guy like Bobby Ryan or Andrew Ladd. But I'm not sure even those teams would take on Darling's contract to just get rid of theirs. Darling is looking like not even a NHL level player going forward. We might as well buy him out if we have to take on another horrible contract just to get another overpaid player who might still be a NHL player (for now, anyway).

I say we sign a bunch of has-beens in the hope of finding the next Eric Staal, and sign a bunch of backup goalies in the hope of finding the next Cam Talbot, and sign a bunch of KHL guys in the hope of finding the next Evgeni Dadonov, and hire a bunch of fired coaches in the hope of finding the next Gerard Gallant.

If we apply the principles of mass production and big data analytics, we should dedicate all of the organization's resources to signing as many of these people as humanly possible. I'm thinking like 300-500. Then we will be absolutely sure to have a decent coach, goalie, and first line next season.

If the multiverse theory is true, then a good Canes team has to exist somewhere...
