Jake Bean (CAN)

So, we have 3 players reping the sightless eye at one of the more wide-open WJC tournaments in recent memory. Finland and the Czechs seem to have stronger then usual teams this year, but the US, Canada, and Sweden are also bringing strong groups and are the favorites to medal as of right now, though Finland seems to be getting a lot of medal talk with that stacked first line and blueline.

First game is already underway and Bad Weather is 1+1 two periods in as the Czechs lead Russia 4-2.

Most of Team Finland looked nervous or scared. The results of the 1st period speak for themselves. For the sake of watching a good game, I hope they can turn it around.

On a side note, gotta love all the Avs fans crying about Bean playing over Makar. Makar just got owned in front of the net for Finland's 1st goal in a way that makes Ryan Murphy look like Chris Pronger.

The Canadian WJC echo chamber is a really interesting phenomenon. If Bean played for say, Toronto or Edmonton, and/or if he were a top 5 draft pick, I'm sure the situation would be reversed. It's a really interesting dynamic.

The officiating in that CAN-FIN game was so laughably bad I was starting to think I was watching a Penguins game.

First goal was so blatantly obviously no goal because: 1) forward knocked the net off the moorings before puck crossed the line, 2) easy case for goalie interference / "incidental" contact with the goalie (puck moving away from net until player kicked goalies leg into puck into net). Second goal I think a case could be made for goalie interference as well. Fourth goal the CAN player tripped up the FIN d-man, stole the puck, and got up ice to set up the goal (FIN couldn't recover from that). I won't argue the Finnish "no goal" as I don't think it was clearly over the line. Still, one obvious no-goal for CAN, 2 other questionable. Not to mention the hooking, tripping, boarding, interference, etc that CAN got away with throughout the game.

It's the former. Finland had a very interesting tourney last year, coaching-wise.
Oh ok, I thought you were serious that the Finland coaching situation was tenuous enough for a coach to be fired mid-game.

As much as I hope for Peters and Francis to be fired mid game sometimes, even I know the shitstorm that would cause.

They should hold a surprise pre-game ceremony and retire Bill Peters.

Didn't they use to say that about Ryan Murphy back then as well?
Yep. This despite the fact that he was just as productive as Morgan Reilly in that tournament and tied for the most productive player on that blueline. The narrative that was created because Vancouver fans were pissed about him taking a spot over the rather mediocre Frank Corrado really took over any preception of Murphy. He didn't have a good tourney (none of the Canada dmen did) but he wasn't the tire fire people make him out to be either IIRC.
