You're over-reacting. What I said was that this was one of his best games yet this season, not that he's been good this season. In fact, what we (or at least I) was saying is that he hasn't been good, but played better this game than he has in the past.

I see what's happening here. I wasn't replying to your post in particular, as much as all posts about McGinn, and how he is talked about on the boards.

You know how in highschool, everybody made the JV basketball team, and there was always that one kid who couldn't play at all, but you're playing the worst team in the league, and you're up 40, so that kid actually gets to go in, and he fires a 3 pointer, and everybody jumps off the bench as they watch it sail towards the basket, but it bricks into the rim, but everyone on the bench high fives and cheers anyways, because he's so terrible, him almost doing something good was seen as a huge victory?

That's sort of how I see these positive "McGinn looked like he was trying extra hard tonight!" posts for a guy with 0-0-0 -4 through 9.

McGinn sucks. Got it.

But he doesn't suck. He's not Clark Bishop, where we're happy if he just manages to not take a poop on one of the faceoff dots. McGinn scored 16 goals last year, and is supposed to be an integral part of the teams scoring depth.

He's arguably been the worst forward on the team through 9. But he's still getting a lot of positive vibes. We're supposed to want to kill everybody after 1 bad game, sometimes 1 bad play, but McGinn can lay 8 eggs in a row, have a couple hits in the 9th, and people are like "Oh yeah, here comes the Brock Ness Monster!"

It's just a weird thing. Of no importance whatsoever.

Personally I like to refer to him as Big Cock Brock.

I think Svechnikov is close to breaking out--much like Aho in his rookie year, only a little sooner. The last two games he has looked quicker (not necessarily faster, but as if he doesn't have as much indecision) both getting to pucks and taking shots/making passes.

The other player who I think can start scoring is Wallmark. I would really like to see him on the second PP instead of Slavin. In all the Charlotte games I watched last season Wallmark was the one who made passes like Williams on the Faulk goal and Zykov on the Ferland goal. In fact, the Aho to Zykov to Ferland goal looked like several Checkers' goals from last season where either Miller or Carrick passed to Wallmark low who quickly found Zykov in front. I think Wallmark has played solid in his role, the staff should reward him with power play time.

I’d wave McGinn and bring up Kuokkanen

I get what you're after here, but to me Kuokkanen is the exact kind of player you overcook in the AHL just a little bit so that he has plenty of pro experience and a little more confidence in himself when he arrives. I'd hate to see him go down the path of being an energy player because that's the hole he tried to fill as a rookie.

The thing about McGinn, is that the Rod is basically playing him on the 4th line. This isn't a case of putting Chad LaRose on the top line because we have nobody else to put there. Or playing Nestrasil and Nordstrom (or Dwyer) on Staal's line because we are completely devoid of talent. We could still use MORE upfront, but we have enough players where a guy like McGinn is playing 10th on the depth chart and kills penalties.

McGinn is right where he needs to be as a 4th liner. Plus he's show chemistry and the ability to play up a line in a pinch. I've got nothing against him for that. Would like to see more of the scoring he had last year, but there are plenty of games left in the season. They will come.

McGinn is a GOOD 4th line player. He's not leftovers that don't fit anywhere else- he hustles, he hits, he can PK, he can generate shots even if he's not as likely to score much. That player deserves his spot. Even if all those posts last year don't turn into goals, or even some of those goals turn into posts, if his expectation is to forecheck like a madman and wear teams down he will be able to do that.
