no brassard? is he hurt or something? that to me is a bigger deal than leaving sheppard off the invite list.

I'd be surprised if Tavares didn't make it to be honest. Not only that but it wouldn't surpise me if he plays a top 2 line role. He's an incredible player, I've been nothing short of impressed everytime I've seen him, having seen him play on a couple of occasions this year. He's probably one of the top 5 or 6 players offensively that have been invited, and thats having seen almost all these players play. For those that haven't seen him, if he makes it, your in for a treat.

This year is a little tougher to predict who makes the team given its a new coaching staff. With Sutter in charge you knew which types of players were going to get a real good look. They should be good though, especially on the back-end, although I'll echo X-Sharkie here too, I'm shocked that Wishart wasn't invited. It does leave an opening for Franson though, and I wouldn't mind seeing Doughty as the seventh d-men.

just a wild guess pretty much, cause I truly believe that the players who perform the best at camp will likely make the team, with a few exceptions.

Goalies: anyones guess, the 2 that perform the best at camp will be chosen reguardless imo. Carey Price isn't a shoo-in just because he is "older".

Defense: Franson and Doughty will be the extra dmen, the 5 other dmen are all left hand shots while Franson and Doughty provide some much needed Rightys, sure not a huge deal, but it helps. Franson has dominated the WHL and Doughty has dominated the OHL and could gain lots of experience for future trips. Hartsburgh faces Doughty quite abit in the OHL Western Conference and is very knowledgeable of his abilitys. The kids an absolute stud and will be a top 5 pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft.

Forwards: pretty much a crapshoot, other than the returnees, the best at camp will make the team imo.

Letang is a righty not a lefty. So I guess we won't need Doughty this year! I think the 7th d-man will be Alzner or Ellerby and Franson will win the last spot (as a top 6 defenseman). That's my prediction.

No there isn't. That was just a onetime thing with Stephen Weiss. Since then, they've decided to be fairly strict about it, which is why they didn't even contact Columbus about having Brule be part of the selection camp.

Why did they make an exception for Weiss? Its not like he's a Lindros, or Crosby

I think the D is pretty much set in that Staal, Bourdon, Parent, Russell, and Letang are all locks to make the team. However, I think the other two rounding out the D will be Brendan Mikkelson and Drew Doughty.

As for the forwards, I love that some people on here don't have Giroux making the squad. Personally, I think he's a lock and that's only because at the summer camp, coaches were raving about his overall game and just how well he sees the ice. Plus, when you consider that it's going to be on the larger ice surface and it's going to give him more room to play with, he'll be lethal. I can also see Tavares making the team, but I don't think he'll have a Sidney Crosby-esque type effect on the team. Think more along the lines of Jason Spezza.

The other forward who I think can have a big impact on the team is Sam Gagner. I live in London, so I get a chance to see Gagner play regularly and I can honestly say that he's probably the most talented player in the OHL right now, including Tavares. I know that people are going to point at their respective franchises and say that's the biggest difference and why Gagner is doing so well, but that's not true either. This kid is ultra talented. I can see him getting a top two line spot before Tavares does. That's no slight on Tavares. Team Canada also did the same thing with Spezza.

Anyways, should make for a fun tournament this year and I've got a funny feeling that this team should be an offensive dynamo. We've got the players that we should be able to play a high pressure offensive game, but it wouldn't surprise me either if they did the typical Team Canada thing and played a grind it out style.

Many top players left out... F.Bouchard, Ryder, A.Picard-Hooper.. Wonder why Esposito get's selected in front of these players.. If they played in Quebec city, they'd be selected, no doubt about that.

Yep, the Rangers have the most.

The Flyers have 2, Downie and Giroux.

I'm sure there are others with two.
Besides Columbus (as already mentioned), Chicago (Toews & Bertram), Colorado (Stewart & Burki), Montreal (Price & Maxwell), Nashville (Franson & Parent), the NY Islanders (Kohn & O'Marra), and Washington (McNeil & Perreault) have two.

are you kidding? or do you just have a bias against ncaa players

You're asking the College hockey mod if she has a bias against the NCAA? lol

I think she was asking because she IS a fan of the NCAA and doesn't know the CHL as well.

And OC, I think all 3 are near locks. Each still have to win their spot, I just don't see any reason why they won't do so..

Yeah, sorry didn't notice that when i posted...I just didn't know why she was asking cause they are all returnees and therefore as close to being a sure thing on this team as there is.

I agree. If Mikkelson makes that team and Franson doesn't it will be a joke. Franson right now is quite a bit better than Mikkelson. He is also a right handed shot. I still think the only way Franson doesn't make that team is if he has a terrible camp.

I'm guessing people think McNeill's a tossup/longshot to make it?

How realistic are Perrault's chances? I know he's pretty small... but any hope?

Why did they make an exception for Weiss? Its not like he's a Lindros, or Crosby

That was the first year they decided to enforce the rule strictly, so Weiss was able to get away with it

HockeyMan9 said:
I don't know whether the rule exists or not, but it wouldn't apply to Brule since he was 6th overall.

I know, but I figured it partially proved the point of elite players not getting an exception.

I disagree, if Mikkelsson or anyone has a better camp than Franson, they will make the team over him IMO.

Bouchard and Picard-Hooper should definitively have been invited. other who should have been invited are Mathieu Carle and Marc-André Gragnani, the canadian team doesn't seen to have an offensive dman, other than M. Staal. So Carle should at least get an invitation.

each year when team Canada announces their invitees or the final selection i'm pissed. last year they didn't selected Derick Brassard, i wonder how many players from Québec will be selected this time. now since Canada recognized Québec as a nation, (we knew we're a nation for a long time, but we only got recognized by Canada last week) we should have our own national team, so our bestest players would finally play in the WJC.

There is no one I would take off that list of dmen and replace with Carle and Gragnani, the only one that would be close would be Mikkelsson.
