I think the starter will be based on who has the better camp.. between Irving and Price. Theres no way they can leave price off the team. I also think Little has to make it because this team is lacking scoring.

Its happened before. I wouldnt be shocked to see Bernier #1 and Irving #2.

Hockey Canada should push hard fro Sidney Crosby... :biglaugh:

Would be funny to watch. :handclap:

I know it never would happen, but i wonder if at the last minute Pittsburg said you can have Crosby, if hockey Canada would break it's rule that you have to show up to the camp if you want to play for the team.

I think the explanation for Wishart not getting an invite is his horrific play at the U-18s last spring. What hockey Canada saw there likely outweighs anything he's done in junior since whether that's right or wrong.

Absolutely. He was pretty bad in that tourney, and that's probably what did it.

I also find myself agreeing with
Montreal Russians: Bryan Little has to be on this team, because I think we might struggle to score goals. Stopping them will be no problem, though - regardless of whether the goalie is Carey Price, Leland Irving or Jonathan Bernier. (Don't know the other goalie at all)

In the words of Goldmember: "I love GOLLLLLD!"

I believe there's actually a proviso in the rule book that allows players taken in the top 5 of a draft to play for Team Canada, even if they skip out on the August training camp.

I guess Kyle Turris will have to wait his turn till next year's squad...they had a lot of returning forwards,so I guess there just wasn't enough room ...I don't know why Tavares at 16 was invited...perhaps to get used to the atmosphere--I'll be surprised if he makes the final roster--I doubt he's ready defensively at this level of competition where he'll have had to face mostly 19 year olds turning 20....

I think he brings that 4th line type player attitude with some scoring ability that Canada always seems to have. It's worth noting that he played in Binghampton last year and didn't look out of place.

You have to be joking, right??? Sorry to sound like a jackass, but....

Cody Bass leads the OHL in fewest goals per minutes played for forwards. He sees feature ice time (first line, first PP and PK), and has for most of the past two seasons (and part of a third). His first two years he played 3rd and 2nd line, with PK and some PP. And in all that ice time he's amassed a whopping 34 goals...WOW!

By contrast, also with feature ice time (as a 15-year old, mind you), John Tavares scored 49 goals and has 29 this year.

Yep, Bass shows up most shifts and is a responsible defensive shut-down type. But he couldn't score in a whorehouse with twenty grand in his hand.

Of course, Hockey Canada probably has wet dreams about that every night leading up to the tourney, that would almost certainly guarantee us gold.

Tavares was invited because he dominates competition in the OHL...and he's only 16. He is on a different level than most kids. He'd go 1st overall no doubt if he got drafted this year. I dont think it is a stretch to see him make the team if he has a good camp.

Here's the list of the Selection Camp Invitees

Yes, I am a bit of a homer... :D
But I've got to say that's one fine lookin' list to choose from. Nice mix of size and skill. I think we should be pretty tough to knock off this year.

Who thinks Gagner will make the team?

I wouldn't be too shocked to see Tavares make the team personally but I still wouldn't count on it. In next I think Irving, if he has a good camp will be the starter. He doesn't face many shots with his junior team and is able to stay focused through this. You'd have to think with this team Canada defence there won't be many shots to be faced for a goaltender.

I was surprised that Kyle Turris wasn't selected as an invite. I have been hearing good things about him I thought he would get a look. I have been hearing a top 5 pick but no invite. If Tavares gets a look why not Turris? I know Tavares is a star in the making. Is playing in the BCHL a disadvantage for making the top 38 players in Canada.

Andrew Cogliano-Jonathan Toews-Steve Downie
Angelo Esposito-Bryan Little-Sam Gagner
Tom Pyatt-Ryan O'Marra-Dan Bertram
Ben Maxwell-Brad Marchand-Devin Setoguchi
13th: John Tavares

Geez, what a scary lineup.

Defence:
Marc Staal-Ryan Parent
Luc Bourdon-Kristopher Letang
Kris Russell-Cody Franson
7th: Karl Alzner

What a group of blueliners. The five from last year will dominate, while Franson will serve as a bit of a power-play specialist and Alzner will be on call.

Carey Price
Jonathan Bernier

I think Irving is more deserving than Price, but Price is a year older, and when things are close, they almost always go with the older player. Team Canada tends to base a lot of decisions on who was selected higher in their draft year, too. I think Bernier will be the backup over Irving, because one of the assistant coaches is Clément Jodoin of Lewiston. Bernier and Irving will have a hell of a duel next year for the starting job, though.

I think you are correct.

Wishart played a ton of hockey during the second half of the season last year because the defence in Prince George was decimated by injuries. By the time he got to the U18 event, he was cooked, and did not play well there. He got banged up and was pretty much a non-factor.

But now, when he's fresh and playing great hockey...would have been nice to see him at the camp with his 'A' game.

So, any breakdown of this by NHL team anywhere?

Looks like the Canucks managed a heady 1 representative, as expected. :shakehead

Rangers have the most with 3. Pyatt, Staal and Cliche.

I got that from the article that 3 was the most, I don't have a complete breakdown.

Yep, the Rangers have the most.

The Flyers have 2, Downie and Giroux.

I'm sure there are others with two.

No there isn't. That was just a onetime thing with Stephen Weiss. Since then, they've decided to be fairly strict about it, which is why they didn't even contact Columbus about having Brule be part of the selection camp.
