Lol NHL teams are screwed hahahah.
It’s always a stupid argument that a team is in bad shape because they have to pay out multiple heavy salaries. It’s suggests the team has multiple high quality players.

In saying that, it’s not NHL teams that are screwed, it’s NHL fans headed toward another lockout.

There was always going to be a lock out, it's the only play in Bettman's playbook. Always works too.

Actually, all teams are in the same salary cap boat. Who will be screwed in the end is the players below star level who will eventually have their salaries squeezed to pay the stars.

RFAs going to want 5 years and Bonus money.

Only rich teams can pay the bonuses like the Leafs.

If teams are shit, the RFAs walk right on teams like JT when he becomes a UFA.

Not going to lose sleep over Dubas overpaying our best player (relative to the market, all these young RFAs are underpaid vs. what they’re actually worth).

Pretty funny that other execs are pissed about it though.

I mean McDavid got paid, Draisatl got paid, Eichel got paid, and other RFAs are going to make bank as well.

Posters and GM's have been blaming other teams contracts for ruining the cap structure since Rick Nash signed his 5yr 5.4 per year deal off his ELC, back in 2005. 13.85% of the cap at the time, which works out to about 11.42M per year at a cap of 82.5m.

Same league, same rules. Stop blaming other teams.

In 2 years time 97 and 29 contracts might be the best contracts in the league. Who would have thought that.

Gary’s #1 one item on his quest to parity is addressing this at the next work stoppage. He loves the phrase - cap circumvention.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not but reading it...it comes off as they are more so upset about setting the precedent of paying out 90%+ in signing bonuses and other teams not being able to follow that trend. Why would the Leafs or Dubas give a damn?

Well they have been making out like bandits since the 05 lockout.

The mid range player has been reaping all the rewards, as the stars haven't been pushing for getting the most that they can. You can believe that the mid range player sure hasn't had any issue with taking everything they can get.

As an aside: can we somehow implement a system which automatically deletes every single comment that compares players' salaries without referring to them as percentages of cap?
On that note, cap friendly shows the percentage of the cap at the time it was signed.

I spent too much time on wiki looking up the cap history to not know this till today

If he 'fixes' that then he should fix the state/province tax tilt as well.

Well there is a Leafs player who's never cracked 70pts who just got $11.5M...
It’s sad that his needs to be the only stringent over and over. He’s still a top 10 player in the nhl imo. And his cap % is right where it should be. Would of it been nice for 8 years sure... but again let’s kkt act like every team wouldn’t take him at the price.

Matthews is literally the second best goal scorer in the entire NHL since entering the league.
It depends.

Are you using goals or goals per game?

If your using goals per game, then you can’t say he finished 2nd in goal scoring in his rookie year because on goals per game he was 5th.

I'm guessing the executive doesn't work in the financial or hockey personnel departments of the team.

Draisatl signed his deal in 2007. Eichel signed his deal last year.

The young players are dominating the league now and they absolutely deserve the money they are getting. It isn't even that big of an issue because all the money is coming from the guys in the 30s who are getting more modest salaries than years past if they are able to stay in the NHL at all.
