Bored at work and thought it would be interesting to see what Provincial teams would look like. I started with individual provinces but had to blend teams to be anything close to competitive to the Ontario team which IMO is a given for best. Note that this is based on birth city which is why some players who don't play for Canada nationally are listed. I tried to keep players in natural positions as best as possible including defencemen on their strong side unless it was obvious there was a clear better player to play on their off hand. Interested to see how everyone would rank the other 3 teams and what changes people would make to the lineups:

Team BC & Alberta:

Taylor Hall- Matt Barzal- Brendan Gallagher
Jamie Benn- Ryan Johansen- Sam Reinhart
Evander Kane- Brayden Point- William Nylander
Jake DeBrusk-Kyle Turris-RNH
Brian Little

Morgan Reilly- Shea Weber
Jared Spurgeon- Colton Parayko
Josh Morrisey- Tyson Barrie
Brent Seabrook

Carey Price
Martin Jones

Team Prairies:

Patrick Marleau-Ryan Getzlaf- Mark Stone
Max Domi-Jonathan Toews- Jordan Eberle
Jaden Schwartz- Brayden Schenn- Alexander Steen
Michael Ferlund- Nolan Patrick- Travis Zajac
Tyler Bozak

Duncan Keith – Matt Dumba
Travis Sanheim – Travis Hamonic
Ryan Murray – Justin Faulk
Damon Severson

Braden Holtby
Devan Dubnyk

Team Ontario:

Claude Giroux- Connor McDavid- Steven Stamkos
Logan Couture-John Tavares-Mitch Marner
Matt Duchene-Tyler Seguin-Jeff Carter
ROR-Mark Scheiffle- Sean Monahan
Bo Horvat

(Other options: Thornton, Erik Staal, Skinner, Spezza, James Neal, Simmonds, Hoffman, Kadri)

Mark Giordano-Drew Doughty
Brent Burns – Alex Pieterangelo
Cam Fowler – PK Subban
Aaron Ekblad

(Other options: Ellis, Hamilton, Brodie, Muzzin, Tanev, Nurse)

Matt Murray
Cam Talbot

Team Quebec & Maritimes:

Brad Marchand – Sidney Crosby – Nathan MacKinnon
Jonathan Drouin – Patrice Bergeron- Yanni Gourde
Jonathan Huberdeau- PLD – Anthony Mantha
Jonathan Marchessault – Paul Stastny – Derek Brassard
Anthony Beauvillier

Marc Edouard Vlasic – Kris Letang
Thomas Chabot – David Savard
Marco Scandella – Samuel Girard
Jason Demers

This would make a great all-star game kind of concept, except players would actually take pride in it. I'd love to see a mini All-Star tournament along these lines.

This exact setup is a bit unfair to the prairies though, 2018 populations:

Ontario: 14.3 m
Quebec + Maritimes: 10.8 m
BC + Alberta: 9.3m
Sask. + Manitoba: 2.5m

There should be one team for all of B.C. through Manitoba.

I voted Quebec/Maritimes as #1. The depth isn't on par, but the top core of forwards, particularly Crosby, Mackinnon, Bergeron, and Marchand I think can outplay anyone. I think they'd hold McDavid even and outmatch Seguin and Tavares handily.

Quebec's contribution has improved a bit lately with Gourde and Drouin looking good and PLD emerging as a force. The defense is an issue but that's greatly helped by Chabot playing like a top-tier catalyst.

I'm pretty sure team GTA could be the best one, and that reduces the size of the population to about 7.5m. It removed guys like Giroux, Scheifele, Couture, Duchene, ROR, and Horvat at forward, and Doughty, Fowler, Ekblad, and Burns. Although, we'd get killed in net.

I'd also take Nylander and Fowler out of it completely. And, move Keith out west.

For me the only debate is between BC/Alberta and Sask/MB.

I think the prairie team would be a tough out for even the ontario/quebec teams, a team that would be scrappy and play above their talent level.... but still put them last.

Team Ontario is pretty clearly the best team but you didn’t include all the permutations for the remainder.

I like the BC/Alberta D and bottom 6 a lot more than Quebec/Maritimes tough call for who to put 2nd.
