Hopefully they will get proper funding as their US counterparts did

What do you mean by "proper"?

My understanding is that there is a correlation between revenues directly generated by the Men's NT and Women's NT and the amount of funding/compensation each tteam/player receives. "Equality" has already been considered as both men and women have a chance to compete as professional athletes under the presumption that being a professional is limited to the amount of money your chosen sport can generate in the entertainment industry.

Subtext- it’s one thing to invest more in the national teams and player development. It’s another when leadership is diverting money to pet projects AKA lining their own pockets. That’s what’s been coming through at this end of the discussion.

It also should be noted that the entirety of Canada's recent success in soccer came off exclusively from the backs of the WNT. If Herdman doesn't get hired and remake the program into winners, then we don't have him invariably getting hired to do the same thing to the MNT, leading them to their first World Cup birth in generations.

The fact of the matter is that the CSA are effectively using the WNT as mules and expecting them to capitulate to their statements about being poor, when they are nowhere near that. The MNT knows that too, considering the rumors just last month about Herdman bolting from the team, and the (AFAIC, still ongoing) spat between Alphonso Davies and the CSA. They're in full support of the WNT in this considering a rising tide lifts up all the boats. In fact, about the only thing that the leadership of the CSA one could consider a good thing is the realization (and indeed, push) to give Canada it's own professional leagues for men and women, considering 95% of MLS/USL sides only really care about the development of their own, American players, and that there are large swaths of Canada that have no real soccer presence, or absolutely could use more teams then just the one (Vancouver/GTA/Montreal) MLS side.

But of course, nothing will really change unless the feds put the fear of god into the CSA like they are currently doing with Hockey Canada. The CSA will simply sweep it under the rug because they believe they can still operate like it's 2003 and no one gives a shit about soccer in this country.

Sounds like it is off the back of Herdman, not on the WNT.

I don't have a comment on the actions of the CSA but certainly one of the overlying narratives is what is fair pay for players from the WNT vs. the MNT.

One line of thinking is that all revenues into the CSA go into the pot and then are spread out evenly among the players from both the WNT and the MNT. Another line of thinking is that the pay is in line with the respective revenues that each team is able to generate into the CSA.

The former is more in line with the "amateur" premise where a "carded" athlete by any of the national sports associations gets funding to allow them to commit to their sport full time and compete on the global stage.

The latter is more in line with the "professional" premise, where you get to play sports for a living so long as their is interest from the public in the sport you are playing.

It clearly is in the CSA' s financial interest to have the MNT be successful. It also is in their interest to have the WNT be successful to fulfil their mandate of competing at the highest level.

There should be no issue with CSA promoting both the men's and women's teams equally but at some point, it does make sense to give some extra attention to the MNT as the additional revenues that are brought in should be to the benefit of everyone.

It is the arguments against this reality (or even acceptance of ) that, IMO, do not serve the WNT purposes very well.
