I'm looking for an outline of roster rules for all leagues in the CJHL.

So far this is what I understand, hopefully others can add to my list for each league.

CJHL General Rules:

- A team may only have six import players on their roster at any one time. An import is defined as an American-born player. No Canadian-born players who are age-eligible to play in any Junior A leagues across the country are considered imports. For American based teams they can only carry 2 Canadian born players.

- Teams are limited to two 16 year olds per team.

- Maximum of 9 over-agers (20 year olds).

- Transfer deadline is January 10.

League Specific

BCHL

- Teams only have 35 cards per season (June 1st to January 10) and therefore can only sign / trade for 35 players in total within the dates mentioned above.

- Roster limit is 22 players at any time, 20 of which are eligible to dress and participate in any regular season or playoff game.

- During the Off-season teams are allowed to have a 25 man roster. (Can someone explain this one? When is the deadline to trim the roster to 22?)

- 6 over-agers per team (20 year olds)

- Teams must have minimum of four rookie players, which is defined as those entering the season with less than 30 games of Junior A experience regardless of age.

- A cap of eight player transfers per team during the 2014-15 season. (Doesn't mean a cap of eight trades per team, it's a cap of eight player transfers per team.)

- No protection list.

**How does a team affiliate players?

AJHL

- 25 player roster limit, drops to 23 on December 1st.

- 5 player reserve list (AJHL White Card Certificate Certificate).

- Affiliation List shall be comprised of all players who have signed an AJHL Affiliation Form. An Affiliated player is not required to sign a White Card, and such player is not deemed to be a protected player. An Affiliated player remains a free agent until the completion of the respective team’s season.
*Maximum of five 15 year old affiliate players. (How many other players? Or only 15 year olds?)
*When the player’s regular team is finished its season, the player may join the Junior A team for the balance of its season.
*Affiliation deadline on January 9
*Players may be added to the roster after their individual season is completed. (What happens here? Players must then be signed counting against the roster limit? Or do they not count against the roster limit?

- 6 over-agers per team (20 year olds)

**Is there a limit of cards per team?

SJHL

- 50 player protected list. Does the 50 player protected list included carded roster players?

- The SJHL currently utilizes a system in which players that live within the legal boundaries of a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s team community are protected by that SJHL team until the player reaches his 17th birthday. This is for undrafted players and does not count against 50 player protected list. This rule simply does not allow the players to be protected or signed by any other team other than their local team.

- 6 round Saskatchewan specific Bantam draft. (Any specific rules?)

- 8 over-agers per team (20 year olds)

**Is there a limit of cards per team?
***How does a team affiliate players?

MJHL

- 50 player protection list. Players chosen in the draft do not count against a team’s 50 player list until their 16th birthday. At that time, room must be made for them on the list. Each team is allowed 50 players on their protected list, including prospective players and active players. (So carded roster players count against the protection list?)

- 6 round Manitoba specific Bantam draft.
*One week prior to the Draft each MJHL club will be allowed to identify and protect two (2) draft eligible players from within the team’s protected zone. These automatically protected players (a maximum of 22 – 11 teams x 2 players) are not eligible to be selected by other teams in the Draft. Instead, these players will be added to their respective MJHL team’s protected list as P List players.

****Any roster limit rules?

SIJHL

- No protection list

- Teams can affiliate up to 19 players. (What limits are there to regulate this?)

**Is there a limit of cards per team?
***Any roster limit rules?

NOJHL

- No protection list

- Boundary rule; Currently utilizes a system in which players that live within the legal boundaries of a NOJHL's team community are protected by that team and require a release to play for another team in the league. Compensation can also be negotiated.

- Each team receives 40 player cards per season, players that played for the team the prior year remain the teams property for 1 full season and cannot play for another NOJHL team unless traded, if the team wishes to sign one of these players it will cost a card.

- Teams can dress 21 players a game.

- 40 player roster limit (in accordance to allotted cards) to 25 on December 1st and from 25 to 23 on January 10th.

*How does a team affiliate players?

OJHL

- 35 player protected list. Additionally, there is a second list for players who have moved to higher levels and still have junior eligibility. (What is the limit on this second list? Does the 35 player protected list included carded roster players?

- Teams also have AP cards players can be signed on which are separate from the protection list. (Twelve skaters and two goalies.) When a player is signed to this card he can play up for a couple of games (and only for the club they sign with). (Is this only for minor midget players?)

**Is there a limit of cards per team?
***Any roster limit rules?

CCHL

- 5 round entry draft for players entering their last year midget (17 year old season). Players are selected from within the Ottawa District Hockey Association (ODHA).
*The league conducts a “Bantam Protected Process” each year. Each team gets to add two bantam players to their protected list for the future. If multiple teams try to protect the same player he will go to whichever team is closest to hometown.

- 30 player protection list. Prior to the draft each year, each team will protect 25 players which must include their two bantam protects from the previous year and any combination of a‖ carded players eligible to return and listed players acquired previously and already on the 30-player list; Bantam selections are placed on a separate Minor Midget list of up to 5 players; and after the season, these five players are automatically moved to the 25-player list. (How does this minor midget list work?)
*All protected players can play a maximum of five games per season until their midget season is over. At that time, they can play as many CCHL games the team has remaining, including playoffs. (Players being added to the roster count against a roster limit?)

- Players cannot be traded until 17 year old season. (Is this the same for all leagues?)

**Is there a limit of cards per team?
***Any roster limit rules?

QJAAAHL

*No information

MHL

- Participating member teams shall, during all scheduled games of the League,
dress a minimum of fourteen (14), one of whom shall be a spare goaltender or
a designated player who shall be, if necessary, the spare goaltender. If the limit isn't reached the team gets fines $100 for every player short.

- Each participating member team shall be allowed to dress the maximum number of players as per the Hockey Canada Handbook. (What is this? Does it extend beyond the 16 and 20 year old player limit? Does it specify cards allotted to each team?)

- 45 player protection list, which includes carded roster players.

- 10 round Midget Draft
*Territorial picks (What are the rules for this?)

- 10 round QMJHL Supplementary Protected List Draft, or until such time as all teams
have passed.
* Teams must issue their supplementary protected list by May 1st that year, draft takes place June 1st.
* Players eligible for the Supplementary Protected List shall include any 17, 18 or 19
player signed to a QMJHL card and on his team’s 25 player registered list on
February 10 of the previous season shall be eligible for the draft except for those
players who are on a MHL teams regular or supplementary protected list.

- 10 player supplementary protected list; Only players selected in the QMJHL Supplementary Protected List Draft shall be eligible to be on the supplementary protected list.

*Any other rules?

I posed this same question about 11 years ago and never had a response. The Nanaimo Clippers was in the 2004 RBC Cup in Aurora Ontario. That year the BCHL had limit of 6 20 year-olds while Aurora used 20 20 year-olds. I e-mailed Hockey Canada about this received no answer

for the MHL (maritime league), before the draft each team can protect 2 local players (Territorial pick) if a team chooses not to protect a player they get an extra draft pick.

I also believe that no Canadian players at age 16 can leave there region and play in another league (ie: a Ontario kid cant play in the BCHL, or Quebec kid cant play in the AJHL, etc.)

yes in the AJHL each team is allowed 45 player cards and 5 affiliate cards.
Only 2 16 yr olds permitted and must dress 9 17-18 year olds per game and are allowed 6 20 year olds.

MJHL territorial picks are chosen in March. I think this keeps other teams from wasting time courting players that are unavailable. The league announcement usually comes a week before the June draft but teams sometimes announce earlier.
CJHL: Out-of-province players cannot be added to roster until they are 18 or traded.
