Hockey is better in Canada because this is where hockey is born. That's it. It's the game we love and every one in Canada has ever played hockey once.

The only sport we're good at? False.
The only sport we're very very good at? True. ;)
How about the only sport we're consistantly very very good at. :)

It's just a matter of time before some American starts with the "Vick is a better athlete than any hockey player".

Good luck.

Vick is a better athlete than any hockey player.
So is Lance Armstrong. :p:

Absolutely right since Canada has won the Gold Medal at the WJ Tournament the last how many years???...... HMMMMMMMMM. Maybe not so up and coming.

Your joking, right?

It's so cute, all of this "rah, rah, rah" enthusiasm from people fighting to try and convince people that Canada is not the #1 hockey nation. :joker:

Funny how most of the arguments against Canada have been "What if?" posts.

Of all the arguments I have read regarding why Canada should not be considered the #1 hockey nation, all of them have been either extremely weak arguments or completely laughable.

If ANYONE wants post a rant that provides good reasons, weather from an article or by a MB poster, regarding why Canada shouldn't be #1 in hockey feel free to post it as I would love to see it.

But until the day comes when I read a topic about this that actually makes sence and doesn't make my sides hurt from laughter, I'm not gonna think for a second that the #1 hockey belongs anywhere outside The Great White North.

Talk about fudging numbers. While this may very well be true, for most U.S. kids playing hockey it is not their first sport. When push comes to shove, most of the really good athletes will gravitate to football, basketball or baseball because those are the glamour sports in the U.S., and the ones a kid is more likely to go to college/make money playing.
Not so in Canada, where hockey is the glamour sport, the game most kids grow up wanting to play in the "big leagues." As a result, the nation's better athletes are more likely to gravtitate to hockey when they get older than they are other sports.

I doubt that more Americans play the game. Heck go to any small town in Canada (population 5000) and you'll see at least 4 girls teams, not to mention the 10 regular teams, then there's the beer league teams,heh..way too numerous to mention. Now if you mention a Canadian city that has an NHL team, now we're talking 100's of teams.

Let's look at Nashville for a second, so far as I know they have a pop. roughly equal to Edmonton. IIRC they have what a whole 2 arenas there? Including the Gaylord center? I believe a whole 6 teams including two girls teams. In Edmonton they even have a rink in the mall for heaven's sake. So basically if you live in a small town in Canada you have way more PPL playing the game than a city in the States that has an NHL team.

No offense intended but I can understand where you're coming from but let's be honest here, what is the biggest thing associated with Canada outside of their borders????

Of Course it's hockey....and if you feel differently please feel free to let me know what else Canada is BEST associated with other than that.

I take no offense to the idea of Canada being associated with hockey, but take offense to the "chest pumping" and "identity crisis" statements. I'm not going to bother to list the other great things this country is associated with, because it might seem to be anti-other nations, which I most definitely AM NOT. I know better than to start generalizing about a group of 100, let alone of 30 million or 300 million. ;)

Sorry, they all play totally different sports that require different talents so it would be impossible to compare.

One thing for sure though, is the average IQ of an NHL Hockey player is much higher than the average IQ of an NFL football player.

now, i'm no football fan, but i do have to disagree. certain positions in football might not require much thought...but you HAVE to have a decent head on your shoulders to play positions like QB, tight end or even on the offensive line. There's more to it than just running into guys.

steps to the ACC
that was to rebutt the comment saying hockey was invented in England.
As far as my american history goes I recall the Native American tribes having a game where they had wooden curved sticks to play an object similar to puck on ice.

I'm not going to guess if it were Algonquin or other Northern tribes located in present day Canada.

I doubt it.
1. Many more football players go to college and many more stay for four years. They're bound to learn something. For the really good hockey players, serious education stops at about 15 years old.
2. Football is a far more complex game to play than hockey. In hockey, you learn a system. In football, you learn literally hundreds of plays.

Yes, basket weaving is such a tough course.

Do you want to do some research and find the percentage of NFL athletes with criminal records?

I would, but I don't want to embarass you, and the mod has said to refrain from a pissing match, so I will respect his wishes and dissengage.

1. Football players go to college on scholarships, not because they are smart. They take the absolute bare minimum courses, just enough to keep themselves enrolled. Basket-weaving 101 doesn't count as an education. Just listen to any 10 random NFL player interviews and it becomes obvious that 5 of them couldn't even spell their own names.

2. Football players learn their position, that's it. Do you think any tight end in the NFL knows anything about the DB position or a running back that could be slotted in at nose-tackle (not withstanding the size issue)? I've played both sports for many years and neither of them takes any more to learn than the other. THEY ARE GAMES.

Sigh ... go ahead, embarrass me. And while you're at it, check on the criminal records for Bob 'The Bad One' Probert, Mike Danton, Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour, Kevin Stevens, Eric Lindros, Joe Thornton, Wojtek Wolski, Rob Ramage, etc.
Trust me, players in both sports have had their share of run-ins with the law.

As for basket weaving ... just proof you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not foolish enough to the claim every NFL player is a scholar, but I'll take the guy with three years of college over the guy with three years of high school 99 times out of 100.

1. Glad to see you don't stereotype. I'm sure every football player is a do-the-minimum, basket-weaving specialist just like every hockey player is a toothless illiterate from Moose Jaw. :shakehead
2. If a TE wants to succeed in the league, he better know a whole lot about the DB position. He better study film of the DB position 3 hours a day. But since you "played" both sports (as a professional, no doubt), you probably know everything there is to know about them

So now for at least the past 11 posts, not a single mention of junior hockey - what a waste of time. :shakehead

In response to the first post that started this ridiculous bit of chest beating, I think it is very premature to think we know who the final two are likely to be - but any match involving Canada will suit me fine!
