I don't really recall what opinion was on Vernon. Do you? I know Osgood has always had a split fanbase. He's either the result of great Wings teams or he's a great goalie who turns it up in playoffs. Cujo got railed on as well if I recall. Legace, McDonald, Conklin. I can remember some harping on those guys also. I don't know if it's a Wings specific thing, but harping on goalies seems to be our team motto.

Half the fanbase hated Vernon. They talked non-stop about his five hole. There was Vernon fans and Ozzie fans. I myself couldn't stand Vernon. I was an Ozzie guy all the way. After previously hating Ozzie and being pissed he took Chevies job. But yea Vernon vs. Ozzie was huge .

Vernon would go down as another failure if not for his one big year, including the legendary Roy fisticuffs and Conn Smythe. He left on a high note, at exactly the right time, as the Wings realized Osgood was ready to take the reigns.

When is the last time the Abby-Z-Nyquist line scored a goal at ES? Why in the hell is that line still together?

We need to shuffle that up and re-unite the TSN line, IMO.

Yeah they aren't necessarily a liability but there is no overwhelming positive energy either. As much as ones are calling out Nyquist, to me (I feel guilty saying it) the problem is Zetter. The last seasons he's lead the league in shots/game...how many has he gotten through lately? Or what real plays is he making from shift to shift, or battles won. He's turning the puck over a lot. He seems like dead weight right now holding that line back.

1. Fun game to watch...good effort from the home team but the Jets forechecked the Wings defense to death. Complete domination and destruction. Nothing you can do at this point, this defense is what it is and this game will be rinse and repeat in the playoffs and the main reason they won't get out of the first round

2. Gus isn't dangerous at all and really needs to diversify his game in the off-season. He's been scouted and game-planned and isn't close to being as dangerous as he was last season. He needs more tools in the tool-box to become the threat we need him to be.

3. Weiss is playing wing for a reason...he doesn't skate well enough anymore to be an effective center...especially in this system where it's demanded you play a 200 foot game. Weiss is skilled enough to be more of a threat on the wing where he doesn't have to worry about defense as much. He's not big and he's not fast, and while the same can be said for Hank the difference is Zetterberg can protect the puck and keep the play going with his incredible balance. Weiss doesn't have that ability. I think Babcock is doing Weiss a solid by keeping him at wing, because he would get exposed going back to center.

The domination and destruction was last game. Against the Jets the Red Wings held their own in a downright physical rumble. I thought the speed and puck movement was pretty crisp. We were winning 3 to 1 at one point folks! Leading in shots (thanks to the multiple PP's) through the 2nd, etc. they played a terrific game IMO, lots of heart from almost everyone.

Weiss is on the 4th line for the same reasons you posted, and I see no way with how good Jurco played tonight that will change. Glendening also has a ton more jump, enthusiasm, whatever you want to call it than Weiss. Is he sulking over his demotion or something? I don't know what his problem is but we need him to get his head out of his ass or call up Pulkkinen as a substitute.

If you were a neutral fan, that would have been a very entertaining game. Terrible goals let in by both goalies, and there were plenty of missed calls. All and all, t'was a good effort. Good show, guys. Good luck the rest of the way.

It was an entertaining game period. Lots of checks, good flow and speed. I am really pleased with the Wings bounce back after the loss in Pittsburgh. I haven't seen much of the Jets this season, they are a fun team to watch. Don Cherry said months ago they were making the PO's I think he might be right on this one!

Why are we getting outshot every game it seems? Defense being porous, not shooting the puck enough?

Back to losing in a shootout...it's like Jimmy never left.

At least they've got a healthy lead on Boston. Big game on Monday with the Habs.

We spend a ton of time in our own zone and can't generate anything by passing the puck up the ice or on the counter attack in transition because our d-men can't make a first pass. All the heavy lifting is done by the forwards and when we can't get a cycle going or create something on the forecheck it's right back in our end...which usually ends up being sustained pressure for the opposition. The forwards tend to be too pass-happy at times and get cute, but the biggest reason is the lack of skill and passing ability on defense.

Couldn't see the game as I was on the road. But it indeed drove me crazy to just see the course of the game via game center. 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:3, 3:3, 4:3, 4:4.
Had to turn it on in a pub, when it went to OT. ****ed up that just the much criticized Howard kept us in the game and didn't get any support by our shooters at all.

Hating the schedule lately. Let's hope for them to show up against the Habs. Just to prove how hard it can be to play a team like ours.

Howard was pretty rusty from the begining. I'm not an expert on goalie technique or anything but his positioning seemed different.. maybe backup up lil bit too much and unsure of himself. didnt look very confident and was fighting the puck.

I think he did settle down after couple goals but it would have been nice if it didnt take 3 ~4 goals.

As for the game, I dont think it was managed very well by the refs. It was a game that we should have won though. Wings are definitelely a better team than Jets.

Therein is the dilemma.

We'd have to break up the fantastic Tats-D-Helm line to try and fix another.

Fantastic? Helm has killed puck possession on that line. I actually can't wait for Datsyuk to not be stuck with him anymore (though knowing Babcock, I'll be waiting months/years).

Uhh... Smith? I guess? He didn't look like utter crap tonight and had a good setup for Datsyuk's second.

Nyquist needs to meditate or something and calm down. He's trying to be too cute with these drop passes and other garbage. Just take the puck to the net. You've done it before. Howie definitely let in a couple softies but whatever, first game back.

I think Weiss and Marchenko both had noticeably good games. I really dislike how Babs is using Weiss. Yes he is overpaid and yes if cap space becomes an issue I would not be against buying him out (though hopefully not until at least another year) but he is still a good pp specialist and middle 6 player. He's being underutilized

I think you're fairly alone with that opinion. Helm and Tatar are both absolute puck hounds, combined with Pavel's ability to steal pucks they've been a great possession line.

When talking about line combo's, he has made this comment a bunch:

Babcock emphasized the benefit of having Helm with Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader with Zetterberg, saying they give the two superstars legs, which means "they get to use their mind and their skill set more."

I think that is why we continue to see them split, so they both have other guys doing a lot of the skating for them. I can understand that reasoning. But the Abby-Z-Nyquist line is just too cold to keep throwing out at ES, there needs to be a tweak there.
