Can we all agree that Erik Karlsson is a terrible defenseman

He's playing really careless at times. There's taking risks and there's dumb risks with very little payoff and Karlsson has been doing that at the very least this game quite a bit. He also had some fantastic plays.
Yup and its driving me crazy. Really hope the sharks dont sign him.

He is giving away pucks left and right in an elimination game. Has been doing this since his days in Ottawa but the fans turn a blind eye to his defensive shortcomings and point to his offensive production. However, that has also dried up. So what does he have left? Nothing. His passing is terrible; he constantly coughs up the puck. His skating is terrible, he constantly lets people enter the defensive zone with blazing speed. He has a very bad physical game and on top of that, is very injury prone. At this rate, he should just move to forward so someone else can play actual defense...

Makes account today for this thread. Hmm. Yep. Seems legit.

Yes. Karlsson, over his body of work, consistently drives shot, scoring chance, and goal differentials for his team. Therefore, he is a good player.
Have you seen him play these past 2 seasons? He is consistently at the top of the league for giveaways, constantly allows opposing players to blow past him, and in general is a huge liability to his team. His style of play is not suited for defensemen.

Elite offense but hes always been fairly average defensively. Maybe a bit better than average given his speed but his offense has always whats seperated him.

His offense has dried up and his skating has deteriorated very rapidly. Given this, should he still be considered a top, or even average defenseman?

In the last two seasons, Karlson has consistently driven shot, scoring chance, and goal differentials for his team. Therefore, he is a good defenseman.

This season in particular in SJ was a bit of a renaissance for him too. He was a monster in all variations of shot and goal metrics.

You might also want to look at the names on the turnover list. They're all high-end players that play a lot. Because you can't make turnovers if you never have the puck. And those guys have the puck a lot.

A lot of those giveaways come from completely unnecessary high risk plays. His job is not to drive offense. His job is to keep pucks away from the net but has a lot of trouble preventing players from entering the defensive zone and frequently makes risky plays (like pinching) that leaves his team vulnerable.

Why would that not be his job? As a hockey player, your job is drive goal differentials for your team, so that your team can win. That's what Karlsson does.

I’m pretty sure his coaches tell him to drive the offense. Because, you know, he is really damn good at it.

OP doesn’t know how to evaluate defensemen, but I’ll cut him some slack as a new poster to this forum.

Sure. Go for it if you can do it without hurting the team. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

He's been a pylon since his injuries. Was elite before, but right now he looks like he has no groin muscles left.

Credibility: shot.

The real question is why you won’t use your actual HF account for your ill-conceived rant.
This is my real account. I am making this rant because he is playing like absolute trash this series.
