Rihanna, and Drake were performing at the NBA All-Star Game last night.

Can the NHL attract these big names or others to there events?

The only big name hockey fans I know are Justin Bieber and Snoop Dog.

She's overshadowed by Fisher's star power.

Drake is Canadian so who knows, he might be a hockey fan.

its more about if they are willing to pay for bigger names to perform. seems they prefer to go with the "name recognition from a decade ago so they come cheap" types instead

This is the real answer to questions about celebrity intermission acts. The Rhianna/Drake show probably cost upwards of $250,000, and 3 Doors Down about half that. The NHL a) doesn't have as much money to throw at these events and b) likely doesn't stand to gain much from paid celebrity appearances.

I know the Canadian metal band 3 Inches of Blood are Canucks fans, so if they would alternate between 3iob and Snoop Dogg to perform each year I wouldn't complain. Just keep Bieber away.

Are you trying to say 3 Doors Down and Five For Fighting aren't big names?

Would a performance by Train excite you?

I thought that Drake was a college in Iowa - I had to look him up. He's what we consider a "big name"?

Ya, he's kind of a big deal, sold the 8th most records in the States last year, probably better than that with digital sales.

The bottomline is the NHL isn't hip in anyway, combine that with frugalness and you get Three Doors Down performing at the All-Star game and Rihanna and Kanye performing at the NBA equivalent. One has Grey Cup like production values the other has Super bowl like production.

Tokyo Police Club and Metric played the Heritage Classic yesterday, so at least they appear to be going in the right direction.

...ah who I am kidding Staind is probably already booked for the 2012 Winter Classic.

NHL used Barenaked Ladies back when they were still a pretty big name for one of the All-Star games.

Edit: Also, for the most part the big name musicians to NBA fans would not be the same as big name musicians for NHL fans. I hate to stereotype, but just listen to the in arena music. NBA plays a lot of rap, and the NHL plays a lot of rock.

    Maybe.

For the All Star Game, we had 3 Doors Down perform after the 1st Intermission.

If they spent the money to book them then they could. They don't though (and probably rightly so).

I don't know who Drake is (am I the opposite of the idiots who don't know who Arcade Fire is?) and I am pretty sure that he couldn't do a damn thing for hockey. As long as Nickelback and Rick Ashley don't show up for NHL events we are fine.

Drake can walk again! Last time I saw him he was in a wheelchair. ;)

For the most part, the only big names the NHL can attract are Canadian performers who made it big in the US... ie. Bieber, Drake, etc. It really doesn't matter because it won't make much of a difference in selling the game to non-traditional markets anyways.

It would certainly go a long way toward shedding the perception that the NHL is only for middle class white people. And nothing makes you look more pathetic than outdated (not classic... Paul McCartney is never outdated) music.

I don't think the NHL would achieve that by going for hip-hop intermission acts. If anything, it would just seem... awkward. Drake and Rhianna don't fit the vibe of an NHL event, and bringing them in would seem like trying a little too hard.

If the NHL wants to break out of the middle-class-white niche, it could realistically do it a couple of ways: either go for a working class vibe with country music, or shoot for ethnic diversity with something softer like Bruno Mars.

I'm not a huge Kid Rock fan, but he would be a realistic big-name act that could fit really well in an NHL event.

Rihanna and Drake = Too high profile and relevant for NHL

    Now

Ashanti + Ja Rule = NHL ticket right there

Both washed up and irrelavant , perfect for NHL IMO
