With the Leafs current core of players can management afford to wait for Tim Liljegren and Rasmus Sandin to develop and come into the lineup or should they be looking to make a move for a proven player?

Of course there is the chance that one or both of them don't develop into NHL players. Also, Jake Gardiner's contract is up at the end of this year and a decision needs to be made about him.

What do the Leafs do regarding their defense?

Yes. But if they want to win a cup THIS season, then no.

They can't afford to rush them, that's for sure.

Trade the good one for Shattenkirk. Present day's Rask for Raycroft.

The could, depending on the cost of a current upgrade. The market dictates every decision. Putting a blanket statement on having to upgrade is how you end up trading Hall for Larsson

Can we afford to wait? Of course. We have many good years ahead.

If a veteran top pairing D becomes available, though, you consider it.

Neither one is going to step in next year and replace Gardiner, so I don’t see the internal replacement. Realistically, both won’t be meaningful minute contributors before 2020-21 season, I’d plan accordingly.

Well what are we waiting for Sandin and Lily to be?
    Stars? Elite?
    What if they're not?

Yes. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, windows can last longer than when your top players are on ELCs. At this point, we can wait on players we haven't even drafted yet.

I can't imagine Gardiner is going to sign a 2-3 year deal. I also don't believe he's going to live up to the long term deal he's likely to receive after this season. He's not a viable option for this team. They can't afford an underperforming, overpaid player on a long term deal.

I question what the Leafs do going forward to bridge the gap. It would be great if both young guys could step in next season, but even if they do they probably aren't impact players. Doesn't seem like anyone else in the pipeline is a replacement either.

A 1-2 year bandaid would technically be doing both. Bring in a cheap vet for this season, maybe next. By then one or both of these guys should be playing regularly.

Essentially, yes, we can afford to wait. The real question is if we can do without Gardiner. I don't know the answer to that one.

Cant say for the full season yet, but the line up isn't looking too bad honestly.

Ozi and Dermott have really surprised me, well dermott wasn't a surprise i guess.
Then Reilly with Gards could be an interesting combo that Babs already tried, leaving Zaitsev and Hainsey for the 3rd pairing and PK.

This gives elite skill on the first pair, potentially good two 2nd pairings.

With holl and borgman as current back ups, i feel liljegren and sandin can take their time right now

Bingo. Our defence is sketchy as is, remove Gardiner from the equation and we have to hope Liljegren develops real quick just to get back to square one.

    Yes we can wait.

Let Gardiner go...or trade him. Also let hainsey go.

    Dermott takes Gardiner spot.

Sign a short term hainsey replacement in UFA.

    2019-20
Rielly - short term top 4 signing
    Dermott - zaitsev
Ozhiganov - liljeren -Rosen - Borgman

Assuming we get someone decent on a short term deal as a UFA, I'm definitely ok with this lineup.

Reevaluate the following year and accommodate Sandin, Liljeren and Oz moving up the lineup as necessary.

Edit: methot, stralman, edler and McQuaid could all be had as stop gaps till Liljeren and/or Sandin are ready for top 4 duty

Yup. I feel the same about Zaitsev, to be honest. Posters on here seem to think we would be fine without Gardiner, and without Zaitsev, and without Hainesey. As if Rielly can play 55 minutes a game.

I hope i am wrong, however im not extremely optimistic about either of these players. Liljegren has all of the tools but no toolbox. Every time i watch him play he seems to make the wrong decisions. Whether its a poor pinch, overplaying in the corner, or shooting instead of passing. I feel that the IQ just isnt there for this player.

Sandin seems to be the opposite, doesnt dazzle you with skill but makes the smart play almost everytime. Problem here is this player is petite in every aspect of the word. Doesnt seem to have much of a frame to gain weight either. Usually guys his size, really need to overcompensate with skill to get by. I cringe here, just because there were two guys on the board (Mcleod, Veleno) that i really wanted in our system.

For me i dont think the Leafs can wait for these guys. Seem to be a long curve ahead of them. Liljegren hasn't really shown any signs of improvements from last year. Season is early though.

Sign a short term top pair defenseman? Sounds easy.

Leafs cannot afford to lose Gardiner. people around here are so fickle. The guy logs big minutes and is a stud offensively. I'd take his production over the odd defensive gaf any day.

It shows Sandin on the roster for the Marlies but he has not played a game. Is he injured?
