Can someone fill me in on the old Red Wings?

I heard stories a couple years ago that there was an owner way back when that owned the Red Wings and either the Bruins or Rangers (can't remember) but he used one of those other clubs as a pool and took the best of them and traded them to the Wings to make them great. Can someone confirm anything like this happening?

James Norris Sr. owned the Red Wings and Blackhawks in the Original Six era. He also owned part of Madison Square Garden as well, so there were ties to the Rangers too. Norris basically made sure that the Red Wings were a powerhouse while the Blackhawks were ignored. I wouldn't go as far as to say Chicago or NY was Detroit's farm team, but Norris made sure his best players ended up in Red Wings uniforms more often than not. The Blackhawks were terrible for the entire 50's decade and nearly folded, and much of their problems are attributed to Norris' neglect and misuse of the franchise.
