Can someone explain xGoals?

I've seen xGoals mentioned a couple places then found a site Corsica where it actually lists xGoals and xGoals/60 for players. Is it an effective stat when measuring how good a player is or is it kind of like PDO or +/- where other variables play too big a role in the number so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt?

I just glanced over the article, but basically, it seems to be expected goals based on the distance you shot from.

xGoals are generally the probability that a given shot becomes a goal taking account of factors like: shot type (backhand, slap), distance, angle of the shot, shooter, etc. The quality of the model has a big impact on the utility of xGoals.
