My buddy who had pre-ordered the game let me jump on his PSN account to try out the beta. Can't remember what level I got too, at least a few beyond whenever you unlock the ABR 223 (more on that later).
I actually liked it a lot more than I was expecting. COD still feels really slow for me after putting so much time into the TitanFall games, and the lack of verticality and vertical mobility from games like TitanFall or Destiny really feels limiting as far as approaches and evasion. On the other hand, the fact that every enemy is essentially stapled to the horizontal plane and moves pretty slowly, made leveling up really easy... and damn if there isn't still a potent dopamine hit every time you level up.
Quick thoughts:
+ I like the move to 150. Gunfights feel a bit more skillful, a bit less lucky. So even though the game is kind of slow and the lack of verticality hurts evasive options, the increased health still allows more skilled players to turn the tables on players who fire the first shot. Which is a good thing because...
- Treyarch still profoundly sucks at spawn AI. It is legitimately crazy how many times enemies will spawn like 10 feet behind you. The game actively punishes aggressive teams pushing forward on the map. It's nutty. You basically have to find the 'trigger point' on each map that will swap spawning locations, and keep at least half your team behind it if you want to maintain map control on a fixed side of the map. That's not a 'skill', that's just annoying.
- Treyarch is also still very, VERY into 3-lane map design, which is fine, but good lord it's repetitive. To be fair, this was a problem in TitanFall 2 as well, and fans were pretty vocal about it. Basically every map's character came down to setting/look, because the feel of every map, the strategy of every map, was essentially the same because of the almost identical layout. TitanFall 2 at least had a ton of verticality afforded by wall-running and what-not which helped a bit, but when you're stuck on the ground, damn... all the maps feel the same.
+ Killstreak rewards seem toned down, which is good. I've found that the players who want killstreaks to be more powerful are usually bad players who rely on the scripted AI bots to do most of the damage for them. Reward players with a powerful attack that can scoop them up a few bonus kills or give their team an advantage that helps them get more kills, no reason to basically do the work for them while they cackle in a corner.
- Not really a negative, but I'm personally not a fan of the operator 'hero character' system. It feels tacked on. Also, the recon ability is so clearly better than the rest, it's kind of silly.
+ I genuinely liked all the weapons I used in this game, across pretty much every weapon class, which is a first for a COD. Usually I key in on a weapon type that I like and just stick too it, but the upgrade paths for the weapons in this game had me using a ton of different ones.
- The ADR 223 is just silly. Now, I enjoy tearing people apart with it, don't get me wrong, but come on. This is a god gun. I assume they'll nerf it somewhat in the full game.
Overall though, I was actually kind of impressed. I'll wait for reviews and fan feedback before putting money down, but I'm way more likely to buy it after the beta than I was before playing it.
