I'm not going to say a steal, but man of man, NJ got quite the prospect for a 6th rounder. Playing top line for Finland, 2nd PP and 1st PK against Canada and has been one of Finlands most dangerous players scoring a goal and having two point blank scoring chances. Will be heading to Penn State next year and may play in the USHL this season.

From what I have seen he has some very deceptive moves to beat defensmen one on one, he is quick, very smart and has a nice shot. This is a complete surprise to me based on reports I have read.

What are thoughts on him from people in Finland?

He has surprisingly good hands when it comes to deking and one-on-ones. But his biggest assets are his tireless feet and very good work ethics. He's a player that the coach can trust in any situation. He seems to be always making the right decisions and is very rarely caught out of position or overplaying the situation.

I don't think he has the upside to be a top-six forward in the NHL, but an elite two-way third-liner and PK specialist is well within reach.

He is pretty good at deking and makes some nice passes from time to time but overall his playmaking and play with the puck leaves a lot to be desired. Could be a decent bottom 6 winger but his offensive upside at NHL level is limited.

Liked his game a lot in the U18's, my favourite Finn there. Really hoped he would get drafted and he did. Really happy.

He is a good grinder - a mix of (post-injuries) Tuomo Ruutu and Leo Lomarov. Some skill, but mostly attitude.

Barely mentioned in this thread so far is his shot. It was mentioned as a strong point by the Jersey management after the development camp, and his goal vs Petruzzelli in the showcase was top quality.

And despite being shorter than the NHL average, he already has a strong physique, especially compared to many of his countrymen at this stage of his development.

He's got some real buzz after dev camp + the showcase. Going to be really interesting to see which direction he chooses for next season, either Finland or the USHL. I think either one is a good choice.

More great things being said about Talvitie. Ryan Kennedy and Todd Button both complimenting him during the Sweden vs Finland match in which he scored another goal. Button mentioned that he has a "real motor"

Head coach Ahokas called Talvitie one of the standouts during the WjSS

Also - Kennedy reports that he will be heading back to Finland and will not be going to the USHL.

Aarne Talvitie (NJ) told me he is probably heading back to Finland this year, not Sioux Falls of the USHL. He's a Penn State commit

If / when Talvitie plays a single match in Espoo United mestis team he won't be NCAA eligible after that.
NCAA players must not play any of the games in pro level if / when they wanna stay NCAA eligible.
That's the reason why guys like Henrik Borgstrom or Kasper Bjorkqvist never played in SM liiga.

A year later, wow. This kid is the definition of helium. Looks like Hormqvist on the ice. He is steong as an ox, a speedy skater with a rapidly improving shot. Can also create seperation in traffic with quick cuts to get in a shooting position.

He had a great development camp for NJ and is playing very well at the World Junior Showcase. Excited to see what he brings to Penn State this season and the World Juniors where he may be captain for Finland. Devils may have found gold on back-to-back 6th round picks in Bratt and Talvitie.

Talvitie a Finland captain candidate

Aarne Talvitie (New Jersey Devils) was captain for Finland in its first game at the World Junior Summer Showcase and would be honored to wear it at the 2019 World Junior Championship.

"For the U-20 team it's a big deal for me," Talvitie said. "I've been a captain of a few teams but never at this level."

Talvitie, who will be a freshman at Penn State University this season, was the captain for Finland at the 2017 IIHF World Under-18 Championship and for Blues in Finland's junior league last season, where he led the league with 34 goals in 41 games.

He attended last year's WJSS but was not part of Finland's team at the 2018 WJC.

"I think last year I played pretty well but tournaments after that I didn't do so well," Talvitie said. "I didn't like my puck-handling skills and puck-moving skills. I think those were the areas I was struggling. Last year, I really concentrated on those things and I think I have improved."

Talvitie has a goal in each of his first two games of the WJSS, playing left wing on the top line with center Rasmus Kupari (Los Angeles Kings) and right wing Kaapo Kakko, a top prospect for the 2019 NHL Draft.

"I think he's taken the step ahead in his game and he has really great leadership qualities," Finland coach Jussi Ahokas said. "He plays a really great two-way game, plays hard and he can score."

14 points in his first 13 games at Penn State (as a 19 year old freshman). I know PSU seems to be a powerhouse, but it doesn't appear that Talvitie is getting any PP time. Pretty impressive start

I guess he might also be underrated because he hasn't played any liiga games as a young NHL-drafted player. I assume he didn't play in liiga because he wanted to keep his NCAA eligibility and playing pro would take it away, correct?

From a skills standpoint, it will not wow you. He has average skating, hands are average at best, he has an above average shot, average on edges. Where he makes up for it is work ethic and hockey sense, he is a pretty smart hockey player without the puck in all zones. He knows where to go to open up the offense zone. He also gets a lot of open looks in the offensive zone. He is the type of player who you want on your bottom 6 wings to win in the NHL, very similar to Joey Anderson as a prospect.

He really doesn't have any particularly special skills, but he's a good all-around player with great work ethic and effort levels.

Indeed, in him I see potential for a good 3rd line winger in NHL. That'd be a great outcome for Devils for such a pick.
