We haven't really had higher picks for the past 5 years. 1st round picks:

2013: Canes 5, Calgary 6 and 22
2014: Canes 7, Calgary 4
2015: Canes 5, Calgary none: traded their 1st for Dougie Hamilton, who is a young, more experienced defenseman who is currently better than our 1st that year (Hanifin)
2016: Canes 13 and 21, Calgary 6
2017: Canes 12, Calgary 16

And they currently only have 4 more points than Carolina with the same number of games played.
