I wanted to see how hard it would be to build a good NHL team from scratch with no restrictions (other than the ones I imposed on myself) in the new salary cap environment.

I decided to try to keep to a budget of $35M.

I chose to try to keep a fixed percentage to spend for all the players on each line.
I chose to spend about:
$2.6M for my 1st line players;
$1.9M for my 2nd line players;
$1.2M for my 3rd line;
$0.5M for my 4th line forwards.

I wanted to give my #1 goalie the same $2.6M as the 1st line guys
$1.2M for my backup goalie, same as the 3rd line guys.

Decided to go with 3 scratches at the minimum, $0.45M each.

I didn't pay too much attention to position, so if I have 3 wingers on 1 line or 2 centers on another line, this could be figured out by the coach later.

Here's my team:

drury(2.93) … doan(3.00) … gaborik(2.70) … ozolinsh(2.75) … norstrom(2.66) … 14.04
prospal(1.9) … nedved(2.2) … nagy(1.98) … mclaren(1.9) … klee(1.9) .............. 9.88
brown(1.25) … calder(1.31) … vyborny(1.22) … kalinin(1.33) … zidlicky(1.14) … ..6.25
cowan(0.53) … kolanos(0.72) … shelley(0.61) … ...........................................1.86
turco(3.16) … garon(1.22) … … … .............................................................4.38
bogunieki(0.46) … rupp(0.57) … rivers(0.45) … … … ......................................1.48
.....................................................................................................$37.89

As you can see, I blew my $35M budget by almost $3M and am only $1M under the cap.

My thoughts: If I had this much trouble building a decent team within a budget with no restrictions except my own limits, I can imagine how tough it must be to do this in the real world.

Another thought: Except for lacking a decent goalie at this time, Phoenix looks like a real good team to me.

just because im lazy i rounded the numbers(up), so excuse me if my numbers arent perfect. This team would be in good shape to go after a few UFA next season as most of the big contracts will be retiring or their contracts will be done(lemeuix, maltby, hull, hasek), but it also has a good contingent of young prospects that can probably step up to first line roles.

tanguay(3.3 mill),lemeuix(4 mill), hull(1.6)=08.90 mill
morrison(3.2),crosby(850k), gaborik(2.7) == 06.70 mill(give or take a bit)
bergeron(650k),carter(950k),calder(1.2) == 02.80 mill
dingman(570k), domi(1.25), maltby(1.5 mill)= 03.45 mill

21.8 mill on forwards

defense
ozolinsh(2.8) berard(2)
phillips(2 mill), modry(1.8)
phaneuf(850k), jackman(1.1)

goal: hasek(1.5), denis(1.7)

scratches(just for fun thought i'd add some brandon boys): Fehr(950k), stone(950k, dunno how much he made?), and altho he hasnt signed a contract.. lets say Skinner(500k)

Forwards:21.8 mill
Defense: 10.6 mill
Goal: 3.2 mill
Scratches: 2.4 mill

for a grand total of 38 million.

www.nhlpa.com has a good list of salaries, the team boards on here have good lists, tsn.ca is a good source.. just do a bit of research my friend

Nagy(2) - Doan(3) - Hejduk(3,7)
Sturm - Nylander(2,28) - Knuble(1,52)
Konowalchuk(1,9) - Ricci(1,52) - Barnaby(1,33)
Rupp(0,6) - Aubin(0,45) - Tootoo(0,6)

Jovanovski(4) - Ohlund
Carney(2) - Phillips(2)
Pitkanen(0,9) - Kronwall

Fernandez(1,7)
Roloson(1,6)

Assuming that Sturm will not make more than 2mio, Ohlund not more than 3,5 and Kronwall about 1m, that will be a teamcost of 37,6mio. And it doesnt have too many young ones in it. Still can add 3 scratches and be under the cap). Mmmh, I like this team, especially the 3rd defensive pair.

How about this? Most guys already have contracts so I used their salaries, but the ones that don't I used there previous salary and their performance from the last two seasons (NHL seasons) and gave them a small raise or decrease depending on the performance. Luongo was the only one with a significant change in salary, the rest were usually within $50,000. I think that this team just might win the cup ladies and gents

-------LW--------$------------C---------$------------RW----------$
Marian Gaborik--2,679,000------Rick Nash--5,400,000----------Shane Doan--3,002,000
Jeff O'Neill--1,500,000----------Sidney Crosby--850,000--------Nathan Horton--942,400
Nikolai Zherdev--942,000-------Alyn McCauley--1,083,000------Scott Walker--1,520,000
Shawn McEachern--1,000,000--Alexander Ovechkin--850,000---Josef Vasicek--450,000

--------D-----------$------------D-----------$
Sheldon Souray--2,128,000---Zdeno Chara--3,724,000
Scott Hannan--2,033,000----Chris Phillips--1,976,000
Joni Pitkanen--900,600-------Nathan Dempsey--874,000

--------G----------$
Roberto Luongo--4,000,000
Martin Prusek--625,000

-----Spares---------$
Mike Commodore--450,000
Patrice Bergeron--646,000
Brad May--650,000

Total $ 38,225,000

I know there is quite a bit of youth there but I also have a lot of experience and proven talent in my opinion.
