Wasn’t that the same argument that was being used against Rielly when the Leafs were in the basement two years ago and the Sabres rebuild was ahead of theirs? Can’t have it both ways
Yes it was the same argument that Leafs fans were making 2 years ago and guess what? They were right. A young defenseman playing too large a role on a team that is largely devoid of talent will struggle.
Side note- Are we still upset that Sabres fans were declaring themselves ahead of the Leafs in a rebuild 2 years ago?
The Leafs quickly emerged from their rebuild and have become one of the best offensive teams in the league. It really shouldn't surprise anyone that their best defenseman's offensive #'s have improved proportionately as the team around him has improved. The Sabres have been a tire fire, and it's been pretty difficult to make reasonable deductions about some of these young players due to that fact. Ristolainen is the poster boy for poor player development. A young defenseman being put into far too large of a role, too early in his career, because the organization has largely ignored the blueline for years.

Last 3 yrs...sane number of games
Risto 126 pts
Reilly 115 pts

Explain how “much better offensively” works...
because he had a good start to this season when his team has 3 scoring lines compared to 1 and a deadly PP unit....which surprisingly makes scoring easier and implying that he would somehow have the same point total playing for the Sabres. It must be mind blowing to tell Carlson and Reily are having such great starts considering how many goals their teams are scoring...must be easy to rack up assists with 2-3 elite snipers on the team as well as other elite playmakers.

I'm confused by this logic.

Buffalo needs a top pairing, experienced D on the right side to play with Dahlin. This trade gets rid of their best asset in doing that.

Toronto would lose their top D in exchange for a far worse one.

This doesn't meet the needs of either team. Perhaps OP mixed Gardiner and Reilly up?

Buffalo's rebuild was never that far ahead. Buffalo was still a bottom 5 team. It's no coincidence that when Toronto started playing much better as a team, Reilly looked much better as a player.
