Not really. We have a fantastic 4th line. Good 1st line, too. It's the middle 6 that's a complete void, and none of Botterill's moves so far do anything to fill it.

I’d have to politely disagree. Every line minus our top line could use work. Our fourth line ran Johan Larsson, Zemgus Girgensons, Scott Wilson and Tage Thompson regularly with Vladimir Sobotka and Evan Rodrigues getting time there when they weren’t higher up in the lineup, too. Overall a mess of a bottom six with the second line not much better. Only real productive player out of them all last year was Roger with Larsson and Girgensons showing good PK ability. At even strength we got next to nothing from the bottom six.

Dea has a connection to Botterill from their days in Pittsburgh, as he was playing in WBS, which Botterill managed. Just a depth player who should spend time between Buffalo and Rochester. He was over a point per game in Springfield last season so he’d be good for the Amerks and as the occasional call-up to the Sabres. Nothing more than that with this signing.

Ex Penguin so Botterill is very familiar with him. Should put up close to a PPG in the AHL and he wont hurt you when you call him up to the NHL, can take a PK shift and win a few faceoffs. Has no standout abilities at the NHL level so don't see him ever sticking at that level long term.

And the trend of fringe NHLer ex-Penguins going to either Buffalo or New Jersey...jeez, I wonder why.

Dea's a fine call-up caliber player will be one of Rochester's better players more often than not.
