I missed the whole haggle thing. Guys, he haggled HUGE with Krug and Smith while all the leverage was with him last year. This year both players are arbitration eligible. There's just no way Krug was going to lose his hearing. Smith maaaaaaaaaybe gets a bit less, big maybe. His 20 goal season last year makes up part of his hearing, and they would have had a hard time keeping him from Atkinson money.

Could be a bunch of things:

Maybe he still feels burned by Kessel.

Maybe he sees the comps that would line up in arbitration (both Krug and Smith could do well looking around the league).

Maybe he'd rather get it settled early and openly than build up animosity between the player and the organization.

Over the years, seen far too many Bruin players in contract disputes/squabbles (not from this front office) and while I understand it`s sometimes part of the game, it got to the point where ya just had to know the player (if he signed) was more than disgruntled

Obviously BPA in the draft becomes a big thing when your scouts find a guy like Pasta, but I think we'd be well served to draft yet another D in the 1st round this year.

Wonder if Arnesson makes it over here by 2016 for a real shot. Seems unlikely right now.

After watching Pastrnak and reading, hearing, and seeing Heiden their 4th round pick I'm excited what Boston will due this summers draft. Lot of high end young D available.

Boston will have 4 guys they are paying as top 4 on D.

interesting and agreed, but on the other hand, are we seeing a team that is too 'comfortable'.....

a little disgruntlement might be a good thing right about now...

this was probably already talked about and I missed it; but during the pre-game on Saturday they talked to Chia in studio and he said there were reasons for the Krug contract being a one year deal that he wouldn't get into.

which to me reads either a trade or a retirement after next year? was there already discussion about this; or does anyone have any insight??

The only thing I heard was that Krug preferred a one year deal as a prove it type of scenario. So he's gambling on himself to play well and get a more lucrative long term deal after next year. Kind of like what Rask did prior to signing that long term deal he plays under now. I don't think any trade or retirement talks have been even whispered about.

he flat out said that's what they would have received in arbitration, IIRC

If that's what they would get in arbitration then what the pointof haggling, right? Lets pay sticker price. :sarcasm: There is always room to haggle. If Colorado can get Barrie at $2.5 million and Minny can sign Coyle to a 5 year $3.2 million deal, then why does Chia always pay premium? I love that both re-signed, but cap space is at a premium. There is nothing in Chia's deals that screams "home team discount". Good deals don't always lead to loyalty, look at Iggi.

I did hear that he wanted to prove himself; so I guess that makes sense. I think I just assumed it must have meant something else.

yup, as much as I blast chiarelli for some of the terrible trades and bonehead things he does he is not Harry Sinden who could care less about winning and players as long as the bottom line was met.

Taking Ray Bourque to arbitration is one of the low points in this teams history, and there were many under Happy Harry as GM.

Good read from Mick. (doc5hole)

Krug, Smith deals funneling Bruins toward an uncertain future
For instance, Chiarelli indicated that Krug will be given opportunities during the rest of this season and the first half of next season to prove himself capable of a top-four role on the Bruins defense. Once that’s ironed itself out, he implied, then a direction can be taken by the Bruins and by Krug (whether he wants to continue being a Bruin)..............

Chiarelli, while discussing Smith, opened the conversation to include the possibility of himself or one of the Bruins’ other left shots currently playing right wing (ie. Eriksson) moving over to left wing next season, especially since Brett Connolly (upon his return) and David Pastrnak are core right wingers henceforth. And where do the dominoes fall for Milan Lucic (whom Chiarelli said is also being considered for a contract extension) and Brad Marchand (Boston’s third most-impactful forward after Bergeron and Krejci).

For what it's worth... Keith Yandle is also set to be a UFA at that time, correct?

As of now, and at the same money, I take Yandle over Krug. I guess this gives Krug a year to prove it. Otherwise we have a 3 million dollar bottom pair, PP specialist, but at least his contract is expiring.

To me, he's been their most impactful player this season.

Yandle looked lost in the Rangers/Wings game on Sunday night.
