I think ideally Chia would have rather moved Seids but if I`m not mistaken, Seids was having off season surgery (can`t recall what the injury was, leg/knee?) and not sure anyone was lined up to take him.

I didn`t like losing JB either but I`m also not too convinced had they moved Seids rather than JB the B`s would have been significantly better than they were following the move

Seidenberg had blown his knee out.

I am not a Chia fan, but that’s not why he traded Boychuk.

The B’s were tight to the Cap, and if he kept Boychuk, Chia was going to have to do some maneuvering to get compliant by the start of the regular season. Also, the B’s knew they could not afford to re-sign Boychuk, who was an impending UFs.

Chia should have held onto him until the deadline. He would have received a much better package imo

Chia blatantly mismanaged the cap by overpaying bottom of the roster guys to long term, big dollar deals and including NMC's. Guy f***ed it up royally and doesn't get the blame he deserves for losing Boychuk for pennies on the dollar because of his own stupidity. Literally the worst GM in hockey. Love that he's f***ing up Edmonton now instead of the Bruins...

I still hate this guy with a burning fire.

So your saying they signed this guy to said contract to cover Krug if he isn’t ready. I think that’s what he meant. If that’s the case, why not get a guy for one year.

Which agent is going to negotiate a one year deal for a player like Moore. The only players who sign one year deals are RFA's looking to get a better contract in the future or marginal players that we already have enough of. One year would be ideal for the Bruins but not for the player.

They were cap compliant when they traded Boychuk.

Yes, wasn't Chia's whole thing in the press conference "you have to make a deal to make another deal". Seemed like his whole thing was move out Boychuk and use the cap space and assets to try and obtain that mythical power RW for David Krejci. Not about being cap compliant on Day 1 of the season.

Tell us how you really feel.

That's a lot of vitriol for the only NHL GM to help bring a Stanley Cup to Boston in the last 47 years.

I didn’t think they were, but could have gotten compliant with a couple of moves that didn’t involve dealing JB55?
No, they were compliant. That’s what made the move so infuriating. I’m pretty sure they were right up against the cap, but compliant.

All they had to do was put Savard's 4 million on LTIR, which they had to do every season.

Chiarelli's "series of steps" including falling down an entire flight of them.

Bruins reluctantly trade Boychuk to Islanders

I thought there was that fabled "other trade" that just never came to fruition.

Still evaluating that to this day I guess. Couldn't get cam to sign off on Bergeron for Larsson I guess.

Well that article is unclear as to whether they were 800K above the cap before or after Boychuk was traded. As it it written after the deal, it seems they were still 800K over the cap after the deal.

And yes they could put Savard on the LTIR, but my understanding is they have to be cap compliant on Roster lockdown day, and they can't put players on LTIR until AFTER the roster lockdown day.

Ultimately Chia decided to play games with the cap in 2013, by signing Iginla to a contract for the 13/14 season, where 80+% of the cost was moved to the 14/15 season. This left the Bruins with a 65 million dollar cap in 2014 when everyone else was playing with 70 mil. Add in the Savard situation, and the Bruins had to be down to something like 61 million for a cap on roster cutdown day.

I'm not a Cap guru, but my understanding is what you are saying. A team has to be compliant with the Cap before they can put guys on LTIR. That said, Chia could have made other moves to get the team compliant that didn't include dealing JB55.

I'm pretty sure Dom outlined some of the things he could have done at the time?

are you guys trying to make me have a stroke? Cause if you are it's working :madfire:

Even though it didn't play out well at the time, you should be happy.

The Isles signed JB55 to an albatross deal I would not have wanted the B's to give him. Liked the player, but not with that contract.

No, I don't think this is right. It's better to put him on LTIR after the season starts, but it doesn't have to be that way.

The move was to keep him and let him walk. You don't go into a season as a Cup contender (which everyone thought they were) by trading a top four d-man days before the season starts, not without an even better one coming bacl. Especially not after you just traded Seguin a year earlier for Eriksson, closing your window.

Two days before the trade, thinking it was almost impossible it would happen, I said, "I like where this team is. Assuming they don't trade Boychuck." This isn't 20/20 hindsight, I was saying it before they did it.

It was fine to let Horton and Ference play out their deals in the name of pursuing a Cup. Should have done the exact same thing for JB55, especially after they were a defenseman short the year before with Seidenberg hurt.

One of the dumbest, most indefensible trades I've ever seen. An unforced error that capped the team right at the knees, and directly led to Chiarelli being fired since the Islanders got the playoff spot the Bruins missed out on.

Here is a conversation about LTIR being able to be used in the offseason, and it touches on some of the stuff we are discussing. It’s Reddit, but seems accurate:

Dom has touched on this before, but I find it pretty amazing that it appears teams and their executives are not really aware of how the Cap actually works and about some of the loopholes (this lack of knowledge appears to extend to the league office as well).

My memory may be failing as I age, but I distinctly remember being told that teams had to be Cap compliant on Day 1 without the use of LTIR. I’m not sure if that was just a misconception here or one that was common, perhaps even among members of the B’s FO?

he was handing out NTC`s like candy and to the wrong players. He just showed too much loyalty to those who helped the B`s win

Yes, but he did so because few draft selections panned out.

If your drafting is poor, which it was for several years running, you have to overpay "journeymen." Not to excuse, and the buck stopped with Peter, but he had little choice.

oh he had "choices" at the draft table, didn`t make a ton of right one`s. Ironically some of his better one`s are those we are starting to see now after he`s been long gone

Claude.... Thoughts?

Way too many to list here. Personal favorites though are overuse of bottom of the roster types at the expense of developing the youth. People like to say PC sucked at drafting for the most part during his time here, but I think a big piece of the problem was the overall reluctance to infuse the lineup and roster with young players, and that falls on Claude. Maybe they did suck at drafting, but maybe it was compounded by poor development on top of it all.
