Since Harper entered MLB in 2012 he's not one of the top 20 position players in baseball. He's one of the most over hyped players in MLB history. Arenado and Yelich entered MLB in 2013 and are ranked 10th and 20th respectively since 2012.

Re-grading the biggest MLB offseason signings

he is hitting .243/.364/.475 with 10 home runs -- a relatively soft number considering 69 players had already hit 10 before Harper reached double digits Wednesday -- and was tied for the major league lead in strikeouts entering Wednesday. He ranked 84th in the majors in wOBA and the Phillies didn't give Harper $330 million to be the 84th-best hitter in the game.

He's drawing walks and one hot streak will increase his current pace of 27 home runs to 30-something. Still, the strikeouts are a growing concern -- up 7.2 percent from last season and more than 10 percent from two seasons ago. One thing to wonder about is his approach at the plate, especially with nobody on. He's hitting .306 with runners in scoring position and .299 with men on base, but just .168 with the bases empty. The same thing happened last season, when he hit .290 with runners in scoring position, .303 with men on and .214 with the bases empty. Maybe he's trying too hard to hit home runs with nobody on. Maybe he needs to view himself as a hitter more than a power hitter. Selling out for power with nobody on isn't working. Grade: C-

The strange thing is how many people seem surprised by this. This is the 3rd year in 4 that he's hit in the .240s.

He's had one fluke 10 WAR season where he hit like Lou Gehrig and for the rest of his career he's basically Carlos Santana. A .250-270 hitter with 25 HR and 90 RBI and a ton of walks to get to a 120 OPS+.

I would take the low average and such if i wasn't so concerned about that K rate..if he would stop flailing atso many pitches ..and he even looks overmatched on FB's that aren't well..overly fast

The Phillies are a complete mess in general. Get through this season and start again with a full winter not trying to figure out how to get every last $330 million

Disastrous signing for the Phillies.

He was a 4.2 WAR player this season, so I think it's inaccurate to call it a "disastrous signing" for Philly

Machado, for comparison sake, was only a 3.1 WAR player with the Padres

There was a twitter post I saw earlier on Freezing Cold Takes, a bunch of Phillies fans were chanting "We got Harper!" at a Nationals game earlier in the season..the responses to that post came with the "this aged well" saying..

He didn't really hit that well and his numbers were mediocre
