As for Axellson :D ...not my favourite player, but he is an Olympian who has made a nice career for himself since he has re-invented himself as a checking (with smarts/speed) specialist.

Is that the role you see Versteeg in? It would be a nice testament to his desire if he could pull that off. Like I said he gives the appearance that he wants to be the go to guy when he's not, so this transformation would be a huge adjustment.

No, not neccasarily... I just think that there are interesting similarities between Versteeg and Axellson... if you remember, alot of people thought Axellson would be a scorer coming out of Sweden -but he was smart enough to reinvent himself as a checker and PKer (and a damned good one at that).

So basically, a lot of forward prospects are top2 lines or nothing... but I could see Versteeg being an effective checker (w speed and smarts) if the top2 lines don't work out for him. That being said... I am still optimistic that he will make it as a hybrid sniper/playmaker.

One comparison that I would make *could* be Afinegenov... Versteeg also has great wheels, but if you watch Afi some nights you wonder how he doesn't get more points. That, to me, is Versteeg... he should be putting up alot more points based on how often he gets things buzzing.

The ultimate test will be how he competes against men as opposed to boys his own age.
