I would not.

So, you are wary of Trotman, who played very well with Chara down the stretch, but are OK with C Miller, who has never played for the B's organization (and is unfamiliar with their D), never mind with Chara? That's a lot of pressure to put on a rookie.

Personally, I think it's a moot point because the B's will get Franson or Sweeney will trade for a legit Top 4. I just can't see DS going into the season with two rooks in the D pairs.

Like I tried to say that to me we must limit Charas' job/minutes somehow, and is Trotman good enoug offensively to allow Chara to be a beast stay at home D?

Also Sweeney has said many times that rookies needs to step up and need to be given a chance but then we lock 5/6 D spots for 3 years, how will they get their chance? and have Irwin for 1year taking that last spot.

I'd be calling on Chicago now, they are in trouble due to this Sharp trade, Kruger is walking+Oduya.
Seabrook for our top pairing, if Sweeney can find us a top pairing D, which to me should be the focus then this team has potential to be really strong 2016-.

I'd love to see Chara-Seabrook in the playoffs taking a D-zone start and just beasting there, especially against the Habs

I understand that, and I was trying to look for players that can give us cap space if we have to and don't hurt our team too much.
We have a lot more ready D prospects than we do have winger prospects.

Still if we need to cut cap then players like Hayes-Pasta-Spooner-Kemppainen-Talbot-Rinaldo-Connolly-C.Miller/Trotman wouldn't give us any due to too small cap hits,
and I'm having hard time seeing 1 of the big boys going out, Bergeron-Rask-Chara-Marchand-Krecji,

leaving us with 4 guys who could give us cap space, Seidenberg, Krug, Kelly and Lou and like you've said Kelly is probably not moving, our wing has no depth so I would really hate to lose Lou and Krug is our only proven offensive specialist, leaving Seids left.
I hope Seids has a great offseason and can come back strong, really liked his game before the injury, but I don't want us to lose any forwards for cap space due to depth issues, Kelly can go if he can go.

I feel like Sweeney wants to have some cap room during the season and get another top6 player added if he feels like it and have some overall cap room and not feel being against the cap, risking another boring trade deadline.
But if he doesn't then he probably can do it just, but that top6 rw could be usefull if Connolly can't find his game.

I've looked my cap hits from there, you had Smith as a backup when I took McIntyre.

The cap is $383,870 per day. Take your daily cap hit (each player's AAV divided by 186). The difference is cap space you can bank. Do that throughout the 186 days of the season starting Oct 7. This is how the NHL calculates the cap - daily not by season.

You'll find $2 million on day one will allow you get a $7 million player on deadline day. You don't need all the money you think Sweeney needs

I had no idea about this, thank you. How much will the call-ups take out of that, how do they affect on your cap and do they eat some of that cap space untill the season is over?

This cap world is too difficult

Where you Dom surprised by the Hawks move?, Daley with 3.3M cap hit makes it seem like he is there to take Oduyas' place and I don't know how they are going to re-sign Kruger.

...

I keep reading about our excess of lefties and how destitute we are on the right side. Like Irwin doesn't fit for some. I don't get it.

LH
Chara
Seidenberg
Krug
Irwin
Morrow

RH
Miller
Miller
McQuaid
Trotman

And Seidenberg can play either side.

You can say the right side of the ice is lacking in top four talent. I agree. But that has nothing to do with Matt Irwin. He fits the team right about where you would expect. 7th guy who slots in the left side. I don't see why this signing necessitates any move. Mutually exclusive transactions.

By the way, like Irwin. Can't remember who called this one a while back, but it was a good one.

Which is why I hate that they kept Julien.

Not sure what Julien has to do with Morrow's current situation. We through this every year, guys with some great tools creep closer to being forgotten/traded and at that point it's up to them to play so well you can't ignore them.

We went through it with Spooner last year, kid didn't do himself any favors playing the way he did for his initial 6 games (last season, not first ever) then he went down and kinda floated for awhile...finally he got a chance and played the way we all hoped he would...now he's penciled in as our third center

Morrow needs to focus on having a strong camp and going from there, independent of Julien and his coaching style, kid just needs to play his ass off. This team and the coaches have shown time and time again they can integrate young more offensively inclined guys as long as that player makes the sacrifices to win. He doesn't need to jump into the play every chance and fly around, he just needs to play smart and crisp, strong on the puck, make those clean first passes.

Personally I liked what I saw initially from Morrow but can see why he was demoted eventually. Let's see what he has this year.

Btw - still working on the little one's gift ;)

Excellent signing. Probably won't be a gamebreaker, but he has some of what the Bs need now, and for cheap. Bs still desperately need a top 3, though, if they hope to be able to compete well.

Irwin is interesting because, like Franson, he's a big body who's kind of a stay-home puck mover (as opposed to a Krug-like rover), who puts up points by getting his shot through and on net. Chara also has the ability to put up points from the backend while playing more of a stay-home role...

Chara - ????
???? - Franson
Irwin - ????

If they're able to compliment those guys with quick, offensive types like Krug and C.Miller, you could create a really dynamic defense that not only supports the offense, but could help drive it. For example...

Chara - Spurgeon
Krug - Franson
Irwin - C.Miller

No big names or big contracts on that defense (other than Z) but every one of those guys is a capable puck mover who could put up 30+ points. It's that kind of push from the backend that helped revitalize Calgary this year.

I know a lot of the regulars aren't in that picture but could this be what Sweeney is building towards long-term?

Oh, Bill. I love Jared Spurgeon.

There's no way is there?

Is there?

Minnesota is going to run into cap problems after next year and they have a crazy D/D depth and they rather re-sign Dumba than Spurgeon, both needing new contracts next year.

I'dlove to have Spurgeon here but I don't know if we are the best trading partner for them.

I like your vision PM of this D core and if Spurgeon could be had, I (myself) like MMB would really like this D core by balancing a little of both worlds as far as grit, speed and tough to play against D.
The only question mark I have is how healthy is Chara because his play with certainly depend on how well he has healed from last season.
If he is back to norm, I know we will have a Chara that will give us what we expect from him even if he has slid a bit due to age and health issues.

This signing indicates to me Kevan Miller will be dealt. Could be wrong but this should get interesting.

Re: the moves that Sweeney's made, it's been entertaining in itself watching what he's doing to transform the team into his image. I expect there to be some rocky moments this upcoming season but I also expect the team to play with a pulse which will be nice after the complacent year that we had just witnessed. If Sweeney keeps making deals and changes thru August/September and not the type where they got rid of Boychuk last summer I'll be grateful.
Hearing the excuse making constantly from Chia these past few years has been amongst the most frustrating thing in my 48 years of watching this team.

this just seems to be a depth signing, 4 lhd, 4 rhd now. think this is more about giving Morrow a full season of playing time with Providence

Two things about this one year contract.

1) Surprise the Bruins for more.
2) Give the youngsters time, if they don't need it. the contract is for one year.

If Morrow is playing in the AHL again next season I can't see him playing for us in the future/year after.

Linus Arnesson can be pushing for that 3rd pairing LD spot, Zboril won't be that far away, C.Miller is pushing on the right side.
I hope Linus makes the team 2016-, he is one potential shutdown D, another in Carlo, 2 recent 2nd round draft picks.
Linus-Carlo could create one helluva shutdown pairing with skating abilities.

I don't have any problem with the move. You need a strong stable of defensemen to survive an NHL season, and adding Irwin helps in that regard.

What I don't like is the bigger picture in that it looks like someone from the D group might be moving in order to free up cap space. It's not going to be Z or McQuaid, so that makes it look like Seidenberg or Krug might be shown the door. That would free up space for a top pairing guy while Irwin takes one of their spots on the depth chart at a much cheaper salary.

Chara - Franson
(Seidenberg - Trotman) or (Morrow - Seidenberg)
Irwin - McQuaid

If anyone is on the move I hope it's Dennis, whom I like, and not Krug. He's a dynamic, game changing guy who can QB a power play. He also possesses the character traits I want from my Boston Bruins.

Trading him to make room for Franson, or trading him period, would be a mistake.

i think Morrow odd man out

8 defensemen

33-Trotman

44- CMiller

McQuaid -Krug

Insurance

Irwin - k miller

4 RH 4 LH

Makes sense - I like it quite a bit

They should still offer Franson 4/18 see if they can get him

Well, then what can you get for JM? Likely a package deal with pick/prospect for...?

I'm not at all sold on trotman... I put him right below Kevin miller at the moment.

I have to wonder if part of why chara wasn't looked at last year all to we'll had something to do with his d pairing at times... although I have no idea how much he played with who at this point so that's more a question than a statement I guess.

From what 8th read though both c. Miller and Morrow (I hope I got that kid from l.a. right) seem to have the edge on skating speed and transition which is what Sweeney seems to keep saying (despite the current roster)

All things being equal if they have a si liar camp I would expect that they have the spots to lose over trotmen.

And to your other point... trotman was an unknown as well until he got the call up.

No cap geek but wouldn't any savings be negligible? My thought before & since the Irwin pick up was that Kevan would be 7 D. As part of a package, maybe, but to offload a decent extra D makes little sense.
