Cholo has also played on NA ice for his whole life, so that's a major difference and is much older. And to say he looked fine defensively is way too generous. He looked like he was in over his head defensively most of the time. He played PMD well enough for a youngin but his defense left a ton to be desired.
I would disagree. That pairing was stuck in the d-zone for stretches here and there but I did not see many actual mistakes from Cholo. He played situations the right way except maybe the one time Krejci got around him and he was forced to take a penalty. Even when he is under pressure he makes good, smart decisions with the puck which is a big sign that he is NOT in over his head. I also don't blame him for stuff like when someone stupidly gave him the puck when a Bruins player was right on top of him so it ended up in a turnover.

If the coaching staff thought he was in over his head they probably wouldn't have played him so much either.

I'd definitely start Svechnikov, which I've been consistent about for a few months, it's sink of swim time for him, imo. Sulak looks like a guy we need to tap as well. I'd also still like to see Hronek start as well. Still nervous about starting Rasmussen.

FYI - ran these because I was interested in how McIlrath performed getting into a game. Posting these charts on HFNYR causes a bit of a shit storm sometimes. So let me preface these with: I'm not making any generalizations about who is good or who is bad through these charts, I did not watch the game, and I have no opinion of it. I was just curious, and figured I'd share since I had them :)

Always loved Svechnikov's shot. Something not a lot of guys on this roster have. I definitely feel he will score in the NHL if he can give himself the opportunity to get on the ice with offensive players.

I wasnt able to watch the game. Glad to hear Zadina had a much better game.

How was Rasmussen in general?

Rasmussen played a very mature game. He was great along the boards and his line did very well possession wise. He had several takeaways with his long reach and forced Chara into taking a penalty on the PP or Rasmussen was on a breakaway. He is certainly NHL ready

Welcome to HFBoards.

Brendan Smith doesn't play in the NHL anymore.

I think our fanbase is patient with the rookies, typically. I think everyone understands it's their first year and mistakes will happen. It's after that first year the gloves come off for some people.

Also, from what I read, Smith will be given an opportunity to come back. And I mean, the Rangers defense is really, really bad too; bottom third of the league bad. So he definitely has a chance to make it back on their roster.

If the coaching staff thought he was in over his head they probably wouldn't have played him so much either.
Or the coaching staff wants to see him in over his head in a pre-season game to see how he adapts so they left him out there. Just depends on your perspective.

Was gonna post the same stats... combined from all pre-season games. I don't like that much about shot attempts, because Scoring chances are more meaningful.

BUT...

Vili Saarijärvi is really making a case of being the best of the "competition" group of young defencemen.

Saarijärvi was 9-1 on scoring chances and 6-0 in HIGH-danger scoring chances against the Bruins.

And against Penguins, he was 12-0 in scoring chances and 3-0 in HIGH-danger chances.

Nobody is even near of him at the moment.

I'm gonna post those combined stats as soon as Hronek gets his 2nd game under his belt.

Brendan Smith doesn't play for the red wings anymore.Just because he didn't pan out doesn't mean future prospects won't either....

I think the point stands that it's very hard to tell what a young D-man will develop into. Smith, Kindl, Sproul, XO. I don't think anyone would've predicted that the prospect who became a long-time regular on the blueline is Ericsson.

It's not that I'm pessimistic about Cholowski. Just that it's too damn hard for me to tell much this early in a player's development, but I'm hopeful.

I like his game a lot. This is why I was saying he is way more talented than those around him where he was being ranked in our prospect rankings. Hopefully this carries over into the beginning of the season, whether it’s in the AHL or NHL.

I get the feeling Vili is getting pretty sheltered minutes. But he has been good.

That may always be the case. Not sure he will be more than an offensive specialist as a pro player, but I still think he could be a good one.

Yeah, I think Frk It is absolutely right, Saarijarvi will probably always have to play sheltered minutes with offensive zone starts against weaker quality of competition, but that's not a bad thing at all.

Yep. If he wins his scoring chances by a mile against that competition, it will help our team.
