If i'm Bergevin i'll eat the final year of that deal for a 1st in 2020.

Habs should be looking at shipping off Tatar and Petry right now, so i think there is virtually no chance we spend to the cap next year anyway. There is a very real opportunity that the Habs could acquire 2-3 1st rounders at this deadline. They need to sacrifice next year to help move this team forward long term.

Montreal just got Kovalchuk for free at league minimum because no one wanted him.

Kovalchuk has 13 okay hockey games and Montreal fans now think he’s worth a 1st rd pick.

It blows my mind.

No one thinks Kovalchuk is worth a 1st-round draft pick, however if you're asking Montreal to take a salary cap dump in return, he just might be worth that much.

There are quite a few Habs fans who have said they want a 1st (+) for Kovalchuk straight up.

Basing this off the Datsyuk contract dump in '16 who had a higher cap hit and salary under a smaller cap. For reference Datsyuk's 7.5 under a 73 million dollar cap ceiling in '16-'17 would be 8.37m under the current cap ceiling.

Boston 1st+2nd + Backes
Team A (likely drafting 3-10) 2nd round pick

Team A turns a high second round pick into a late first and late second.

Datsyuk's salary was zero. He didn't get paid by his NHL team after he left for the KHL - only his cap hit remained. The Coyotes actually saved real dollars in the Datsyuk deal, since they dumped the Joe Vitale LTIR contact on Detroit (who had to pay the portion of his salary not covered by insurance).

Did not even think of that. Thanks for the correction.

That's a huge difference. Any team that takes on Backes has to shell out 4 million for an AHLer. There aren't many teams that would be willing to do that without significant sweeteners.

Somebody already mentioned it but yeah, Datsyuk wasn't owed anything. Detroit got out of that cheap because it pushed AZ $7.5M closer to the floor and didn't cost them a dime.

No intrest in trading the 1st if Boston can’t fix the longterm 2nd line Rw issue.
Montreal can’t help with that
so rot with Backes and his 6M contract
YOU THINK THIS WILL BE CHEAP? HA!
this is basically the same the Leafs were in with Marleau. I'm not sure how desperate the Bruin's are to dumping that cap. but it's not going to be cheap especially for a contender.

They are under the cap with Backes.

Unless you can fix the 2nd line issue no screaming need to move him.
