So essentially Backes will not be reporting to the PBruins until at least the deadline. He will, with the Bruins permission, skate on his own while Sweeney tries to find a trade for him. Shannon thinks if Sweeney can't find a trade Backes will report to the AHL. Either that or get suspended without pay I assume.

I can't imagine Sweeney is willing to give up a first to dump him right now. Sweeney would be much more inclined to use the first for a deadline add than just to dump Backes. He would probably be more willing to give up a first at the trade if we still have one than now. Not sure what else could sweeten the pot enough for someone to take him. Any teams willing to take on dead cap have a proposal?

UFA class of 2016 is the gift that keeps on giving...

Cap hit and term are similar to Marleau this past summer.

Owed money could be the same depending on timing of signing bonuses etc.

Leafs had to pay a 1st to get out from that contract, will be interested to see if that is the market to make a move like this, or Sweeney can do better.

Alzner barely makes less than Backes and has an extra year why would Boston add a first round pick?
Because unlike Backes, Alzner won;t get injured by simply looking at him.
Also, Bruins only have 3 defensemen signed for next season.

What a bad free agent class that was. No matter what to unload him this trade deadline or in the offseason it's gonna hurt. Just the nature of the beast.

If Zucker does get moved for futures Minnesota would probably have room to carry Backes' salary next year. It'd make it hard to add anyone over the summer, but if Boston's paying a 1st for the trouble... might not be crazy.

The Ducks or the Kings probably make more sense, though.

The approximate value of a 1 year 6M cap dump was set with the Marleau trade last summer. It could go up due to having an extra few months on it or it could go down because the Bruins aren't in nearly as much of a bind as Toronto was, but that is likely the starting point.

No, that value was the cost of buying out Marleau and being stuck with $6 million in complete dead cap space. Backes' situation isn't the same as that, they'll still be getting a player, albeit a bad one.

I was thinking this. Dubas was in a corner though...he HAD to dump Marleau in order to sign Marner. Not sure how pressured Boston is here.
