The Bruins begin the postseason Saturday against the Capitals. But the season has already been a success in one measure: Bruins telecasts were a ratings hit on NESN this season.

The 49 games that were broadcast on the network drew a 4.18 household rating, the highest for a season since 2014-15 and up 18 percent over last season.

The broadcasts saw growth of 10 percent or greater in some notable demographics, including adults 18-34 (2.19 rating, 11 percent growth), and men 25-54 (3.87 rating, up 12 percent). The adults 25-54 demo earned a 2.81 rating, up 7 percent over last season.

I have to assume the combination of minimal in-person attendance and no open bars played a key factor.

Possibly but not an exact statement at face value. Personally, I think it is the quality of team on the ice. Regardless of all the complaining throughout this year on here, this was a great team. Other sports have seen a drop in tv viewership since the damndemic hit and everything shutdown. This team mostly performed well, they came out of the gates winning alot, struggled in the middle season due to injuries galore and than when healthy plus some excellent trades this team kicked ass. People want to see teams that are good.

People are stuck at home, scripted TV and movies have been largely disrupted by the pandemic too, so live sports has great drawing value. The Bruins have had a good year, especially since the trade deadline, and their only competition for viewers most of the year was the Celtics who are frankly an unlikable team that is frustratingly underperforming. Since the Bruins are looking strong headed into the playoffs, they'll probably be more popular than the Red Sox through June (though the Sox are playing very well too and can pick up the mantle after the playoffs are done).
