With Mike Condon and (seemingly) Chad Johnson now off the market, if the Bruins want to upgrade their backup goaltender position, my 2 UFA guys are:
  • Anders Nilsson - 27yrs; 6'6"; 10W - 10L - 4OTL; 2.67GAA; .923 Sv%; Last year's cap hit: $1.0M
  • Keith Kinkaid - 28yrs; 6'3"; 8W - 13L - 3OTL; 2.64GAA; .916 Sv%; Last year's cap hit: $725k
For comparison:
Anton Khudobin - 31yrs; 5'11"; 7W - 6L - 1OTL; 2.64GAA; .904Sv%; $1.2M

Post Chiller Defense Conundrum

Sweeney has gone on record that he offered up his first round pick for a defenseman and was rebuffed. I believe it was Brodin.

Fletcher, according to reports, then offered Scandella but wanted the pick, which Sweeney rightfully declined.

I have problems with the rumored defense solutions, Daley and Shattenkirk. Daley because of his age and the fact that he went unnoticed until the playoffs. Shattenkirk because of the cost and term for a second pairing talent.

Can we live with the present D corps for one more year, filling from within? By that time, McAvoy will have had one year, plus, tutelage with the great one and should be ready to become a leader on the blue line.

Carlo and Krug should complement each other nicely on the second pairing, leaving The bash brothers and O'Gara filling the 5-7 slots. I think we can get by assuming good health.

For 2018-2019, O'Gara can pair with McAvoy, giving him protection as he meanders. By then, hopefully, one of Zboril and Lauzon, with a year of experience in the system, can pair with McQuaid or Miller.

This way Donny can focus on forming a third line and picking wingers for Krejci.

So you want to trade Kevan Miller for picks so you can sign a 45-year old Jagr?

No thanks.

Kinkaid is a guy I would look at.

There's a contract limit, so more than likely trading 5 guys for 1 guy isn't gonna work, quantity doesn't equal quality.

Some of these contract numbers that are getting tossed around make me very, very thankful that Sweeney got it done with Marchand when he did. That alone is enough to forgive all his dumb moves.

Pretty much a given that the 4th line is Kuraly-Nash-Accairi now.

Don't be so sure.

Depends on who the other forwards are.

Cassidy clearly likes them better than Spooner or Belesky.

Kuraly - Backes - Acciari was a line during the playoffs when Krejci was unavailable early and Pasta got moved up.

Not saying I want this, but if Kuraly gets semi-regular to regular minutes on the 3rd line next year I wouldn't be shocked. Acciari I'd be more shocked but not entirely.

Gonna be a lonnnnnng year if they can't ice a better 3rd unit then that.

Probably just saying pegging any of Belesky, Spooner, or Hayes to be on the 3rd line, or even in the line-up next season, is folly considering how each were used by the coaching staff down the stretch and into the playoffs. The might be on the roster (Belesky and Spooner likely still make the team if here), but they might be watching from upstairs. Cassidy clearly wasn't a fan of either player this past season.

With the news/rumors floating out there today of Draisitl getting $9m on his next contract, there is no way you are signing Pastrnak for $5.5m for 8 years. That would be the biggest home town discount in the NHL. He is neck and next with Draisitl as the best forward in the 2014 class and is a better goal scorer but not a center. It would be a miracle if he signed for Marchand money for 3-4 years in a bridge deal. If you want 8 years your are looking a $7+ minimum.

34 goals before 21...and solid defensively which is a mandate on the Bruins.

some people jokingly said we should offersheet draisailt (first its impossible as we wouldnt be cap compliant after signing pastrnak) but also how much sense does it make for anyone to sign

Edmonton will match for 2 firsts, second, third... so you got to go over 9.8 mill... then you give up 4 firsts

now suppose you think he is worth 4 firsts... its actually 4 firsts and 9.8 mill cap hit

now imagine you spend that 9.8 on 2 ufa... say you sign karl alzer or kevin shattenkirk... maybe patrick marleau or jimmy williams

for the cost of having draisailt and an elc you could have marleau, alzner and 4 firsts

i dont think pastrnak is close to 9.8 so he might be at risk for an offersheet... but even then what would we rather have...

pastnak or a 6 mill ufa and 2 firsts and a second and a 3rd?

I posted this in the Pasta thread, but Taylor Hall's 2nd contract was exactly 10% of the cap at the time. Hall at the same age is a pretty good comp for Pasta (hell, Pasta is arguably better). 10% of the cap puts you at $7.5 million. I think that's the minimum you see Pastrnak get.

I am hopeful that Pasta will keep on the same path as Marchand and take the high road with a hometown discount of 5-6 million.

I'm a fan of Dobie, he's a battler, but he's a bad fit for Boston. He's a good see puck, stop puck guy...but with his size there's no room for error.

I prefer Chad Johnson. Too bad we missed out.
