SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Moves the puck well from the back end and is mobile. Also has NHL size for a defenseman, as well as late-blooming overall ability. Can dominate the game at lower levels.

Flaws: Doesn't display enough game-to-game consistency in the NHL. Makes mistakes with and without the puck. Must also avoid taking bad penalties that really hurt his team.

Career Potential: Puck-moving depth defenseman.

You can never have too many NHL defensemen in the playoffs. I think Buffalo had 5 defensemen go down in the playoffs one season.

So, why the hell does a contender pick up a guy who got waived by the worst team in the league?

they must think he isn't even good enough to serve as a #7-D, but he can be that guy for us? come on ...

Depth move, and the brass is hoping he can improve under our system? Is there any connection between anyone currently on our staff and Potter? Maybe they think he's coachable.

It's called depth, cost no assets, only 6 healthy D in Boston, Trotman and Morrow hurt in Providence.
Not every move has to be earth shattering.
That being said I will be disappointed if one more D is not added that can play more of a role.

From the Edmonton Journal:

Potter’s an interesting claim, and quite possibly a good one for Boston. The trade market seems flooded with depth defencemen, but almost all of them will cost an asset to acquire and many of them have significant dollars remaining on their contracts. Potter’s an exception; it cost nothing to pick him up off the waiver wire and his contract ($775,000 cap hit, expiring this season) is easily manageable for any team.

Boston has long been expected to add a defenceman via trade – owing to the injury suffered by Dennis Seidenberg, an injury which will cost him the rest of the season – and likely still need to do so. Potter adds a big, right-shooting defenceman who does a lot of things well, and gives them some cheap depth at a position where they need it. Likely the Bruins will still look to address their blue line, but this may negate their interest in adding a lower-tier option on the back end.

For Potter, this is a fantastic decision in what has been a difficult season. Potter struggled through injury at the start of the year but has been a good (and underrated) depth defender for the Oilers over the last two seasons. Now, not only does he have the chance to rebound at the NHL level but he has an opportunity to play on a team with a legitimate shot at winning the Stanley Cup. It’s a big step up.

More than that, this is a smart move for Boston. The Bruins were rumoured to be interested in Nick Schultz, but Potter is significantly cheaper both in terms of acquisition cost and contract dollars, and realistically both players are No. 6/7 defencemen at this point in their respective careers. It’s hard for an NHL team to go wrong in adding cheap depth for nothing.

Is this gonna be it?

Time is running out fast. It looks like nothing is going to get done. Will be VERY tough to win the Cup when Chara is looking gassed in the first week of March!!:help::shakehead:cry:
