What's the argument for the Espositos over the Richards?

We'll make it simple: P. Esposito vs. M. Richard and T. Esposito vs. H. Richard.

Top ten finishes GOALS (P. Esposito): 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th

Top ten finishes GOALS (M. Richard): 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th, 6th

Slight edge to Richard who finished second behind Howe a few times.

Top ten finishes ASSISTS (P. Esposito): 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 5th, 6th

Top ten finishes ASSISTS (M. Richard): 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th

Esposito is the winner here by a wide margin.

Top ten finishes POINTS (P. Esposito): 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 7th, 9th, 10th

Top ten finishes POINTS (M. Richard): 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th

Esposito is still ahead. While Richard finished again behind Howe many times, Esposito also played himself with a generational talent: Bobby Orr. And he still outproduced him by a fair margin many times.

You'd expect a player considered top-5 all-time to have at least a scoring championship under his name. He hasn't got any.

At the end of the day, Esposito was a much better playmaker than Richard, and won scoring championship with his ability to set up goals. If Richard had been better at it, he would've been most likely on par, or very close to Howe, who outproduced him badly, even thought he finished 2nd in scoring those years.

All-Star Teams

H. Richard

1st All-Star Team: 1 time
2nd All-Star Team: 3 times

T. Esposito

1st All-Star Team: 3 times
2nd All-Star Team: 2 times

Advantage Esposito.

Major individual awards:

H. Richard: None
T. Esposito: 3 Vezinas

Advantage Esposito, again.

It's pretty hard to compare forwards and goaltenders. That alone should do it. Sure, I could bring up the number of cups, but I think that's a weak argument players don't win cups. Teams do.

I've never seen someone contend that Phil Esposito was a better player than Maurice Richard before. I really don't know how to approach it.

Just going by the latest History of Hockey Top 100, M Richard is 9th and Esposito is 20th; H Richard is 59th while Tony O didn't make the cut (at the time - the list went unfinished, and in the 2008 aggregate he came 101st but didn't crack the top 100 after voting time).

Where are the Turgeon brothers (Pierre and Sylvain) or the Lemieux brothers (Mario, Alain and Claude, Jocelyn)?

The only thing Eric Staal doesn't have yet on Pierre Turgeon is longevity. He have a slightly lesser peak but has won a Stanley Cup, an Olympic Gold and was a 2nd all star. He is on his way to a HOF career which Turgeon does not have. Jordan is without a doubt a better player than Sylvain has ever been, being one of the top defensive forward for some years now. Trowing Marc in, to me, make up for the lack of longevity yet.

As good as Mario was, Alain Lemieux's career is irrelevant. Never played a complete season on some pretty weak teams. Claude would be the worst of any top family player listed here (except the Sutters but there's like 54 of 'em). Jocelyn certainly doesn't close up the gap being an disposable 3rd-4th line player.

Actually.. How many brothers have won both won awards in the NHL?
The Art Ross Trophy didn't exist back then, but Doug Bentley would have won it in 1943 and his brother Max in 1946 and 1947. Max also won the Hart Trophy in 1946 and the Lady Byng in 1943. One year they finished 1st and 3rd in points.

Their top 10 finishes in scoring:

Doug - 1, 2, 2, 3, 6, 7
Max - 1, 1, 3, 3, 5
