In the offseason, the Caps can realistically keep only one of Alzner, Orpik.
This season, Orpik has played better than Alzner, but given the age factor, one figures the Caps would still lean towards keeping Alzner, if possible.
Orpik has been excellent on the bottom pair with a young PMD partner (Schmidt), he's part of a very good PK unit, and he's been very solid in spot top-4 duty, as well, averaging 17:57 TOI. He's 36, two more years (after this season) left on a contract that pays 5.5M per. IMO, on many teams, he'd be a good overall top-4 guy, still.
I'm actually honestly not completely sure if he'll have negative value or not. The contract is relatively expensive, but the remaining term is short, and the guy looks great this year. If you're a team with cap space and less-than-stellar defense, Orpik is likely to bring a significant positive impact, IMO. Even more so if you have young D men that need a stabilizing force. When I take a look back at the Caps in the beginning of the Ovi era, it would've been a huge boost to get a guy like that for a couple of years with all the inconsistent/young D-men the Caps had. On the other hand, if the salary cap stays the same this year, more teams might be feeling the squeeze, making it more difficult to move a contract like this.
So, what what you ask -- or give -- to put Orpik on your team?
