If this is really a Sather coup half the Tampa cup team from 2004 will be in advisory roles by next season.

I'm one of the seemingly many who didn't know (or forgot) that he had a position with the Rangers. Does anyone know what his responsibilities were?

I think the general gist of his job was to "be around the team as a successful NYR." The Yankees do this kind of thing all the time, especially in Spring Training.

My guess would be one of three reasons:

1- Sather is back in a meaningful way (IIRC, Leetch had an ongoing issue w/Sather dating back to his trade to Toronto, and only came back when Sather stepped away).
2- Leetch felt loyalty to JD and/or Gorts.
3- Something completely mundane (sometimes people just have other shit to do, and it isn't like Leetch needs the money. I also never really got the impression that he had any interest in coaching or front office positions).

Leetch, along with Brad Richards, was named Hockey Operations Advisor.

"New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has named Brian Leetch and Brad Richards Hockey Operations Advisors. In their roles, Leetch and Richards will work with the hockey operations department in both hockey-related decisions along with off-ice player and prospect development. In addition, Leetch and Richards will assist prospects in the Rangers organization, including players with the Rangers' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, in on-ice development."

So, I don't know. How does one evaluate what Leetch did in his time here?

Brooks just tweeted that Leetch resigned his hockey operations advisory position with the Rangers. Nothing about why yet.
Always a reason; we just have to wait for Larry Brooks and here he is. ;)

Man will we be able to recover from this?

We have nothing to lose and Glen Sather know this, because next season is crucial for us to show the fans the new direciton and style of hockey, and too many underperform with the previous coaching staff.

It is literally a wake up call. Haaland wake up the whole team in Dortmund and won the german cup this evening with 2 goals with Sancho both world class soccer players in age of 20!

To be brief our younger top talents need better coaching; they need to achieve and unlock their raw talent skills and set to improve the whole Rangers team. Next season is a new chapter in the Rangers history. It might take 2 seasons to achieve playoffs, but I felt it was necassary.
