(HAP) The Philadelphia Flyers and Martin Brodeur broke off contract talks yesterday with all world goalie Martin Brodeur getting closer to becoming an UFA.

The Flyers have desperately tried resigning him after acquiring him from Columbus for a package of players and picks. If the team was to resign Brodeur before he hits the FA market they would also forfeit the 2008 1st rounder. It appears that the Flyers may just wait and sign him after he becomes a UFA so they could keep their #1 in 2008, however, management has denied this strategy publicly.

"Our number one goal besides making the playoffs is signing Martin to a long-term deal. There was a reason we gave up so much to acquire him and one of the reasons is that we wanted first shot at signing him before he became an UFA," said the Philly GM.

"We've made two reasonable offers and Marty is not satisfied so we told him we'd get back to him but rest assured we'll do whatever is possible to resign him."

The trading of Wade Redden appeared to be in some ways a way to open up some cap space mainly by dealing Chelios so it does appear that they are preparing to make one final offer that will satisfy both sides but time is running out before Brodeur hits the open market.
