This thread is to document and discuss all of Brian MacLellan's confirmed moves as general manager of the Washington Capitals.

To start, we will ascribe to MacLellan all transactions since the announcement that McPhee's contract would not be renewed and that Oates would not return as head coach (April 26, 2014). This includes the signing of RW Garrett Mitchell, the signing of D Christian Djoos, the trade of G Jaroslav Halak's UFA negotiating rights to the New York Islanders, and the hiring of Barry Trotz as head coach.

Didn't he also send Rissling to the Preds for a 7th

That trade occurred before the official announcement that McPhee's contract was not being renewed, so I didn't put it on MacLellan's record. It may very well have been him, but there's no evidence to indicate that it wasn't McPhee's trade, since he was still technically the GM at the time.

Yeah that was my mistake. I looked it up after I spoke/typed.

Can you add a category?

Stanley Cups Won: 0

Let's put constant pressure on Ted 'n Dick and the whole management team to win the damn Cup. The Caps should not be a toy for frivolous owners.

I can only hope they win so many that we lose the ability to keep track on our own.

We're probably giving him too much credit for Trotz as a stat line, though. Seems pretty clear BT was in Ted's sights all along. Ted has said he was the only coach they "coveted". I doubt BMac just stepped in and created that desire out of nowhere.

Brian MacLellan's memory and a teammate's advice helped the visiting New York Rangers score a breakaway goal 76 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals last night.

Using a tactic recommended by teammate Wilf Paiement, MacLellan split two defenders at center ice and beat goalie Pete Peeters. The goal was MacLellan's second in this first game of the best-of-seven Patrick Division final.

"Wilf Paiement was telling me before the game that he had seen (Michel Goulet of Quebec) fake a shot against Peeters and then go between his legs.

The quotes from Ted's Take make it pretty clear that they didn't really start looking in earnest for a coach until they'd already decided on MacLellan, and that MacLellan was a major part of the interview and hiring process.

Yeah, but I don't buy it. I think they had him in mind all along. Supposedly the Caps reached out to Trotz as soon as he got canned.

you are assuming again. right? we don't have any information on when Leonsis decided to go with MacLellan. The Leonsis comment backs up the idea that Bmac was the heir apparent.

Again, hiring somebody does not mean you have to announce that somebody.

I think I got ripped by....Langway maybe....for saying I wouldn't be surprised to learn the Caps had hired a GM and/or coach long ago but had not announced it til they wanted to spend media time on it.

Do you guys really think the team decided to hire MacLellan on Thursday of last week?

They're called "opinions" and some are better than others. Take it or leave it. The part about the Caps reaching out to Trotz was from a web article, not assumption.

Great idea for thread, props!

Anybody expects big (or at least medium big) trade at draft?

No, Tuesday apparently:

@AdamVingan: Brian MacLellan found out about a week ago that he had been promoted to GM.

A Latta extension would be my guess.

I heard MacLellan tell Vogel the old, "If there is something there that makes sense and improves the team, we will do it." answer.

At the draft. Nothing unless they have decided not to keep and extend Green. Then Green is dealt at the draft. Otherwise. Nothing
