BC law pretty much follows the English common law with some minor deviations. BC law is perhaps the closest to English common law although there have been some proposals to update and modernize the BC statute governing libel and slander.

In Canada common law is under the constitutional jurisdiction of each province so there are some minor differences province to province (proof of damages, merging libel and slander into one defamatory procedure, etc.) but on the whole it is English common law (except in Quebec).

If you check back a page or two in this thread I summarized the law in BC and pointed out some differences with US law on this point.
