Let's just look at his toughness for a minute . We lost Mcquaid , people want to trade Miller . Backes obviously isnt worth the cash and people want him out as soon as possible. Chara is not a young man .

Ritchie is a guy who can give a good go to most the leagues tough guys . Backes is not and we dont want chara to have to do everything .

Say we found someone to take backes and traded Miller . We would basically be last yrs Toronto Maple Leafs with the exception of a very tough long on the tooth defenseman.

Now I know fighting and toughness isnt was it used to be but do we really want to be one of the wimpiest teams in the league in the regular season especially . We have always had a couple tough d-man but we haven't had a forward who could fight at any real level since Thornton and lucic left .

I am a pretty big fan of 55 so I am not sure he can bring near as much him all around but give me a guy who can hopefully crack the line up and stick up for our boys and i am on cloud nine . If he isnt doing enough hockey wise, fine replace his spot at the deadline . Playoff hockey has a lot to do with grinding and strength but zero to do with fighting or intimidation so he won't be needed if his hockey isnt good enough . If it is than great .

He isn't scoring 20, he might not score 10 but he will add some size and a little grit to the fourth line. If he hits, uses his well and drops the gloves more than 3 times a year, which is his average, I will be happy. I don't expect a speedy skilled winger at 6'4 for a million a year, I expect a big winger who will hit, stand up for his teammates and score once in a while.

I'm not counting on him to score a lot, but maybe he'll surprise. Don't know much about his offensive abilities but he did score 16 goals a few years back seemingly playing 3rd line minutes. He also had his career high in shot attempts by far with 312. And it wasn't like he was scoring at some absurd rate, just a 9.6% shooting percentage.

Who knows, maybe can he score 15+ playing with Coyle and Heinen

He’s basically Derek Boogard 0.6, I’ll take it.

I don’t have a problem with the signing. As long as he sticks up for his teammates it’s all good. I’ll live with the dumb penalties. They aren’t paying a lot in cap space . No big deal.

I agree, simply put he is worth the 1 mil gamble. I am not saying a team has to play goon hockey in today's NHL, but a team still needs some players who can stand up for teammates when required. The other factor is if he could score a few dirty goals great. This team needs size and skill at RW why not give him a try . If he fails hopefully he can help providence, nothing ventured nothing gained. IMO a very calculated signing on July 1st. Well done D.S

He has a great shot just has trouble getting it off, the year he had 16 he had a lot of power play time, he won't get that here , although using him as a net front presence on the second power play isn't an awful idea.

Good signing. Sweeney has found diamonds in the rough before in Wagner and Nordstrom and its not out of the realm of possibility that Ritchie could contribute on a 3rd line. If he doesn't work out its no big deal at that price point. I think Sweeney should stay away from the big FA signings like Backes and Beleskey and stick to his strength which is finding cheaper depth players through FA. Nordstrom is a keeper btw. Players that step up like he did in the playoffs don't grow on trees and he should never break the bank. Looking forward to a stable 4th line next year with Nordstrom Kuraly and Wags (easily the best 4th line in hockey).

I could definitely see him sticking on the 3rd line. As early as last year the Bruins were trying Nordstrom on Krejci's wing, so I don't think it would be surprising to see him get a stint there as well. Obviously I hope they just bite the bullet and get a legit top 6 guy, but I don't mind them experimenting to start the season then making a trade once they have exhausted their possibilities.

least we know he doesn`t just pick his spots/opponents, not like Parayko is a feared fighter but also dropped em` with Wilson who, while I don`t consider to be a great fighter, is a more than willing one

not sure what happened in Dallas, kid had one very sound offensive year then seems to have disappeared from that category, wondering if coaching changes or personnel changes hurt him a bit?

Either way, interesting pickup, surely creates competition internally and that`s not a bad thing

I hope Cassidy can. He seems to be the kind of guy who wants discipline first.

I'm just hoping for a Zach Sanford-esque presence in the lineup, where he gets put in against bigger teams and provides some jam with a little scoring. I don't think he's good enough to be a regular mainstay in the lineup based on his past couple of years, but hey, who knows.
